NSF CAREER award to Wayne State University to create next generation network infrastructure 05/22/2026

A five-year, $599,998 NSF CAREER award is helping Dr. Rhongho Jang and Wayne State University’s Department of Computer Science explore the future of intelligent network infrastructure.

The project will study how advanced computing and AI capabilities can be integrated directly into internet routers to improve the speed, efficiency and security of data-intensive applications while strengthening cybersecurity defenses.

The award will also support hands-on student training and the development of open-source tools for the broader research community.

Senior biomedical engineering student-athlete Tony Hatzigeorgiou took home two major honors from the Wayne State University Department of Athletics at the 2026 Golden W’s event, held this past week at the Masonic Temple in downtown Detroit.

Hatzigeorgiou was named the 2025-26 Deans’ Award honoree from the James and Patricia Anderson College of Engineering for earning the highest cumulative GPA among all student-athletes in the college. He has earned a spot on both the Dean’s List and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester and will also become a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team selection.

He was also selected as the 2025-26 Men’s Sports Student-Athlete of the Year. Candidates are evaluated on academic distinction, athletic accomplishments, involvement, university and community service, and coaches’ recommendations. A three-year team captain, Hatzigeorgiou has played in more than 190 games for the Wayne State Warriors baseball program.

Researchers at Wayne State University are leading a $473K collaboration with the Great Lakes Water Authority to improve phosphorus removal at one of the nation’s largest wastewater treatment facilities, helping protect the Rouge River and Lake Erie from harmful algal blooms.

Wayne State Cyber Defense Club claims state championship, advances to Midwest competition 02/24/2026

Wayne State University claimed first place at the Michigan Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, outperforming peer institutions in a live, scenario-based challenge that simulates real-world cyber threats.

The student team will now represent Michigan at the Midwest Regional in March as they continue their push toward a national championship.
