You don't need a bigger title.

You already have one.

And yet some of the most important work you'll do this year will not happen inside your own org chart.

It'll happen sideways, with peers who don't report to you and have their own priorities and agendas.

Here's what most senior leaders get wrong about peer influence.

They think it starts with a compelling argument.

It doesn't.

It starts with genuine curiosity about what the other person is actually saying.

Your colleague isn't resistant because they don't understand your vision.

They're resistant because nobody made them feel like their reality was factored into it.

So before your next peer-to-peer conversation, pick up the phone.

Not prepared to pitch.

Just to ask, what would make this work for you?

That's where peer leadership begins.

Not with volume, but with the willingness to listen first.

What is one thing you've done to earn influence that had nothing to do with your title?

People around here just aren't accountable.

It's one of the most common frustrations leaders carry, and one of the most misunderstood.

Because when people hear accountability, they hear blame.

Shame.
Punishment.
The critic in us goes straight to it.

And the moment accountability becomes punishment, people stop raising their hand and start playing it safe.

But here's what the word actually means.

It just means keeping an account.

A clear comparison of results promised against results produced.

An honest look at what was committed to, and what actually happened.

No blame, no shame.

This is where supportive accountability changes everything.

The goal isn't just to support the person.

It's to support their commitment to their own goals.

Because supportive accountability is best used as a hand, not a hammer.

One builds people up.

The other just leaves bruises.

So the question worth sitting with is simple.

Are you holding people accountable in a way that lifts them, or one that quietly teaches them to play it safe?

What would it look like to raise one standard this week with full support behind it?

Athletes spend 95% of their time training and 5% competing.

Most executives flip that around.

We wonder why leaders feel like they're running on borrowed time.

Practice isn't a luxury you earn when things slow down, because it never slows down.

The practice is the work.

Block 90 minutes every week, non-negotiable, and defend it like a board meeting.

Debrief a hard conversation, role play one you've been avoiding, or read a chapter from an author you admire.

Great leaders train like athletes, so grab a coach and book a call so you can start this week: https://phoenixperform.as.me/schedule/dcf331f0

Most senior leaders don't hold on because they're selfish.

They hold on because they're afraid the work won't meet the standard, afraid letting go means losing control.

And that fear is quietly starving the next generation of the only thing that develops leaders.

Real problems, with real stakes.

So hand one real problem to a younger leader this month, not a simulation, one with true room to grow.

Then ask the harder question: what are you afraid will happen if you let go, and is that fear actually true?

Your legacy won't be the problems you solved, it'll be the leaders you trusted before they were ready.

Pick one person, hand them one real problem, and share what happens in the comments 👇

A robot can run your reports, schedule your meetings, and flag what's falling behind.

Let it.

But no algorithm can look a scared team member in the eye and mean it.

That part of the job has never been on any software roadmap.

It's yours.
