Proprioception—the feeling that helps us understand where our bodies are in space—is stimulated through heavy work activities such as running, jumping, crashing, hugging, climbing, pushing, lifting, and pulling.
Incorporating heavy work into your lesson plan is one tool you can use to help children regulate their sensory needs, relax, and be more attentive in class.

Close your eyes. Can you sense where your feet are? Your toes? Your fingers? If you reached your arm out, to the side, would it touch anything?
As adults, we take this awareness for granted, but many children need help with sensory integration so that they can be more attuned to where their body is in space.
Heavy work—which is any activity that pushes or pulls the body, and especially the joints—can help children grow awareness of their own body, which is important to build self-regulation.

Properly placing children in the correct support program isn’t just necessary for the child, it’s essential for the entire classroom. An improperly placed child is more likely to struggle and experience distress if the material isn’t matched to their needs, while the rest of the class can grow restless and bored if the curriculum doesn’t engage them. Ultimately, this can disrupt the learning environment for the whole class.
