Detroit Future City, in partnership with Data Driven Detroit, has taken a deeper dive into to Detroit's rental landscape in our newest report, 2026 Update: Understanding the Rental Landscape: A profile analysis of Detroit Landlords — and it's not what one might think.
A few key findings from our research uncovered:
• Most landlords in Detroit own just one to two properties, growing by 12,000 since 2021.
• An overwhelming number of landlords are Detroiters, with 65% having a Detroit address.
• Landlords are small businesses without the supports that many other sectors receive from both the government and nonprofit sectors.
