Seguimos construyendo…
And we need your input!
As we continue working through the red tape to further develop our arts and cultural campus, we’re working through an important step with the city: securing a special land use determination.
Right now, the land is zoned for housing (R2). This approval doesn’t change that, but it does give us permission to move forward with building the kinds of spaces our work actually requires for community use such as classrooms/studios, outdoor gathering areas, an art gallery, café, and retail space. Allowing us to pull permits as we go during a phased out approach to construction.
We’re grateful to our partners at Parkstone Development for supporting us through this process.
Community voice matters here. If Garage Cultural has had an impact on you, or if you live in the area, we’d really appreciate you taking a moment to share that. Whether it’s a comment, a reflection, or even a question. Your input helps demonstrate the value this work brings to Southwest Detroit and the broader city.
Thank you for being part of this work with us!

Y necesitamos tu apoyo/comentarios!

(Spanish in comments)
Over the summer, we got to work on a really beautiful project with , and our summer youth, who brought new life to the middle portion of the Vernor/Newark viaduct we had painted back in 2018 with and .
This viaduct has carried so much communal memory. Ever since the first piece was painted by in honor of SW Detroiter Yvette Passament who passed away there in 2010.
We worked together for seven weeks to come up with themes that could visually tell a story of unity, culture and shared identity between the Hubbard-Richard, “La Bagley” (aka Mexicantown district) and Corktown enclaves of our beloved Southwest Detroit. While also highlighting the critical role graffiti art and culture have played throughout the years in elevating an urban identity. Honoring OG graff artists who have also passed away over the years.
We shared more on it in our latest newsletter, which can be found via the link here:

Thank you to all the artist, youth and residents who encouraged us by honked while we were out there, and to our commissioning partners and funders who made this project possible: Cultural Crossroads, MiSide, Michigan Central, Community Foundation for SE MI, and Ralph Wilson Foundation.
May our walls continue to elevate stories we hold close to our hearts and may the memories of all those honored there continue to inspire us.
P’alante mi gente, siempre.
