Warriors impact the community every day! On July 30, our student organization participated in the Day of Hope event organized by the Neighborhood Service Organization, in collaboration with the city of Detroit to benefit the unhoused population in the metropolitan area. Volunteers from School of Medicine provided resources and health screenings such as blood pressure readings, glucose readings, wound care and prescribed medications as needed.

Anne Messman, M.D., our associate dean of Graduate Medical Education and associate professor of Emergency Medicine, talked to the podcast about her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and how she handles the condition personally, and with the people with whom she works.
Diagnosed with MS at the age of 16, Dr. Messman hid her disability, explaining that her limp was from a sports injury rather than divulging that she had MS. She said that after years of hiding the reason for her disability, she now identifies openly as a person with a disability, and reveals her condition to the doctors, residents and physicians-in-training she encounters daily in the School of Medicine and emergency rooms in which she works.

Today's student in the spotlight is Elise Turke! Elise is in her third year of medical school at our School of Medicine. She is active in the Student Senate, the house-based learning communities and is even a member of the medical school's singing group. Her favorite part about being a Warrior M.D. is everybody's excitement to form a community.
"From my experience, every student at the Wayne State University School of Medicine is eager to work together toward our common goal. Since each of us are coming to Wayne with unique experiences and backgrounds, it's pretty cool to observe how much we learn from each other," she said.
We agree, Elise!
