Many instructional designers did not begin their career in instructional design. I love hearing about the various ID journeys. If you transitioned to ID, or an adjacent role, what field did you transition from and what made ID an attractive option?
I'll start: software development via engineering. I love the idea that I am involved in the educational process in one of the most fundamental ways possible... by designing learning experiences, while still using the problem solving and application skills I learned as a mechanical engineer and the understanding of systems and "respect" for data and technology from my CIS background.
