Meet Mary Welsh

Dr. Mary Welsh founded Suzie Q’s Kids, a non-profit providing comfort to hospitalized children, after the loss of her daughter. Welsh's organization distributes comfort bags and has expanded to support kids in shelters, foster care, and more. She credits the Boost program for helping her establish the foundation for her non-profit and networking with other organizations to further her mission.

What is the CSE Boost Program? Detroit Mercy has a ten-week, intensive workshop for early-stage social organizations that have already entered the market with their product or service. Boost participants learn business fundamentals, improve their strategic thinking, articulate a business plan, and develop a business model that demonstrates social impact, growth, and long-term financial sustainability.

Austin's experience:

"Coming into this course with prior knowledge of the investment world, my goal was to deepen my understanding of financial concepts and enhance my practical skills. Professor Sabagghi accomplished that for me. His academic excellence and insightful teachings greatly enriched my understanding of investments, allowing me to effectively manage the MAJESTIC fund and apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. Additionally, I would like to thank the Charlton Center for generously providing us with the opportunity to manage the MAJESTIC fund. This hands-on experience has been invaluable in bridging the gap between theory and practice, allowing me to develop practical skills that will undoubtedly shape my future in investments. This experience has deepened my understanding of investment strategies and equipped me with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of real financial markets. I am confident that the insights gained from managing the MAJESTIC fund will prove to be a cornerstone in my journey as an investor." Austin Ursuy

Holly's experience:

"Going into this class at the start of the semester was a bit intimidating being that I have no prior knowledge about the investing world. However, I am so glad I took this class. It is one thing to listen and learn about a topic, but another thing to practice it and gain real-world experience from it. I am so grateful to the Charlton Center for giving us the MAJESTIC Fund to work with throughout the entirety of this class as it allowed us students to practice what we have learned throughout the course through real-life activities. It was a great learning experience; a kind of opportunity that is not offered almost anywhere else. " Holly Misiakowski
