Wayne State University Omicron Omicron chapter of the Phi Alpha National Honor Society for Social Work

A Brief History

The concept of a national social work honor society came from a group of undergraduate social work students at Michigan State University in 1960. Investigation revealed that local chapters existed at three schools. Those three schools along with a few other schools formed a National Honor Society Committee in November of 1960. For more than a year, this committee worked on th

It is a tradition for the MSW and BSW graduating class to leave a gift to the school. This gift symbolizes the legacy that the graduating class will leave behind. In the past, graduating classes have left behind paintings and another left a bench for you to enjoy when you come to the School of Social Work.

This year, the class of 2017 has decided their legacy gift will be a clock from Shinola. A photo of the clock will be revealed at the Dean's Graduation Luncheon.

In order for the class of 2017 to accomplish this goal, they will need your help! Please consider purchasing your class of 2017 apparel or Wayne State School of Social Work gear through the online store below.

Thank you!

Thank you to the Phi Alpha members who participated in the SLP at Forgotten Harvest this morning. Eleven people packaged 3,600 pounds of food in three hours. With each pound being equivalent to one meal, that's 3,600 meals! That's impressive!

For those of you who are interested, Wayne State University is hosting the HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS FORUM on
January 17, 2017, from 4-6pm in Student Center Ballroom C.

Human Trafficking is often thought of as an issue that happens in other countries, yet this is far from the truth. The USDS indicates Michigan is one of the top five states for human trafficking with an increase seen in this crime during the Detroit North American International Auto Show. Please join us to learn more about this issue and what we can do to help. This year we will have 4 speakers that will provide education on what we need to know to fight against human trafficking. This event is free and open to the public. After last weekend's service learning project with S.O.A.P., the timing of this university-sponsored event is perfect!

For further information contact Sara Byczek, 313-577-8564, [email protected].

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help S.O.A.P. of Metro Detroit last weekend. We had 34 members participate, 22 at the Warren location and 12 at the Taylor location. S.O.A.P. said they had a record number of missing girls identified. If you happened to watch the news yesterday, you may have seen that the Victory Inn on Michigan Ave. was raided by local and federal authorities because of drugs and prostitution. The Victory Inn has been on law enforcement's radar for awhile and was one of the motels visited by a group of Phi Alpha members. I'm sure we speak for everyone when we say it was an honor to help out such a wonderful organization. We've attached a few photos from the Taylor location. If you have any photos you'd like us to share, please e-mail them to [email protected] and we'll add them to Facebook. Thank you!

These are just a few photos from our Induction Ceremony on December 8th. Thank you to Raidan Productions for taking them and to Yasmeen for sharing them! If anyone else has photos they would like us to share, we'd be happy to post them.

Good evening! We hope everyone has enjoyed the time off for the holidays. This is just a reminder that our first service learning project is scheduled for 9:30 tomorrow morning with S.O.A.P. of Metro Detroit. If you signed up to participate, please remember to check in with us so we can make sure you get credit for project completion. Laine and Caitlin will be attending in Warren, and Dena and Kellie will be at the Taylor location. Each member is required to complete two service learning projects. If you're unable to attend tomorrow, no worries! We'll have several other opportunities for you to get involved. Information will be coming soon!

S.O.A.P Up Detroit Auto Show West 12/09/2016

S.O.A.P. of Metro Detroit has posted details regarding the Detroit Auto Show event scheduled for January 7th. They will be organizing from two different locations, Taylor and Warren. They've set up a separate event for each location through Eventbrite. When you click one of the Eventbrite links below, you'll find a prompt for purchasing tickets which cost $10 each. The money helps to cover the cost of the bars of soap and other operational necessities, as well as lunch (which will be provided for you). If you prefer to pay the day of the event that's fine; however, the organizers request that you pre-register through Eventbrite so they know how many volunteers to prepare for. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at both locations. Further detailed information can be found by clicking the links below. If you sign up for this event, please e-mail us at [email protected] using "S.O.A.P." in the subject line so we know how many students to expect. A representative from Phi Alpha will be present at each location. We hope to see you there!
