In a Behind-the-Scenes clip from our Women’s Mental Health Roundtable this past March, Debra, the CEO of Oh My Heavenly Salon, talks about her experience going to the doctor with her mother. She was so surprised by how attentive they were and all the varied resources they had ready to use.
It’s impossible to know all the resources that are available, and sometimes they won’t be known unless you advocate for yourself and ask the right questions. At the Institute, our goal is to equip you with the tools needed to advocate for yourself, and share any resources that might be helpful.
In our linktree and on page 29 of our Heart Health Resource Guide, we have a set of questions to help guide you through a doctor’s visit, and hopefully allow you to feel more prepared for the day. You can also join our newsletter to always be up-to-date on community events and resources!

We know we’re a little late, but we couldn’t let World Health Day pass without a shoutout 💙🌍
This year’s theme, “Healthy Beginnings & Hopeful Futures,” reminds us how crucial it is to protect the health of mothers and newborns — especially Black mothers, who are 3–4x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes.
At the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, we’re committed to raising awareness and fighting for equitable healthcare for all. Let’s keep the conversation going, because every mother deserves a healthy beginning and a hopeful future. 💪🏾💕
