How can kids experience what social democracy means? During our spring break adventure, the Wonder Kids visited Councilmember Shahanah (District 39) at City Hall to present their ideas on how to create a city where all citizens can be at ease.
At the beginning of the week, the Wonder Kids embarked on a quest to discover the Lost Preamble โ a giant scroll written 250 years ago to find peace after a long period of fighting. Letters of Abraham Lincoln, Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington guided the way as they found this document (translated into kid language) torn into pieces! And so the quest to restore peace began.
The ideas of the Preamble guided their way throughout the week as they created a simulated society - Crocodile Town - paying taxes, deciding how to allocate public funds during Town Halls, and making agreements together. Learning through play, they suggested establishing a due process, a proportional tax system, a public school, and community-based housing. Their ideas were inspired by experiencing these real scenarios through an imaginative lens (โฆthat is, after seeing greedy store owners, military bases and private jails shaking the peace of Crocodile town!) :D
Based on their experience and ideas for how to make the city better, they wrote proposals in 3 committees - the Green City Committee, the Committee for Citizens in Need, and the Kids and Families Committee. They took to the subway, rehearsed, and presented these ideas clearly to Councilmember Hanif on Friday, walking past a statue of George Washington on the way.
This was a powerful example of the impact of adventure-based learning, the method we are developing here at School of Wonder combining experiential learning with imaginative play.

๐ We are launching a scholarship fund!
๐๏ธ As part of our mission to bring wonder to all children, we are starting a scholarship to invite kids from underserved communities to experience a summer of wonder adventures. Partnering with public schools across Prospect Park, teachers will help identify students who are curious, creative, and enthusiastic about play and learning.
๐ฟ Our goal for this first year is to offer 8 scholarships, and we would greatly appreciate your financial support. Donate by May 15 to help us achieve this goal before the summer!

You might be ๐ซ wondering ๐ซ how do we manage being outside all day during the intense summer days of summer camp? ๐ฅต
๐ We adapt our adventures to the weather, and even design adventures around the powers of Gaiaโs climate! ๐ During hot summer days, we love visiting water, playing games with ice cubes, and finding ways to game-ify staying in the shade. ๐ซง We build tarp shelters to protect from sun or summer thunderstorms, and learn about sound waves and songs in the tunnels of Prospect Park. โ๏ธ Being outside in all weather teaches us adaptability, resiliency, and connection with earthโs cycles. ๐

Last week, we celebrated Eid Al Fitr with the Wonder Kids while testing a brand-new adventure in the making: _We, the People._
This upcoming summer experience invites Wonderers to explore the pillars of social democracy in an approachable, playful wayโbuilding connections and community as they go. Each day is inspired by a core idea from the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, brought to life through games and missions.
Together, children experience the values of unity, diversity, freedom, equality, and belonging. Last week we made portraits of each other and built a human bridge to cross an invisible river
