Flowers in a Montessori Classroom
In a Montessori classroom, flowers are more than something beautiful to look at. They are an invitation for children to slow down, observe, care, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
When children carefully cut a flower, pour water into a small vase, arrange each stem, and choose where to place their creation, they are practicing so much more than flower arranging. They are strengthening concentration, coordination, independence, and their sense of order.
They notice the smallest details—the softness of a petal, the different shapes of the leaves, the vibrant colors, and even how a flower changes from one day to the next.
Flower arranging is also an act of Care of the Environment, an important part of Montessori Practical Life. Children learn that they can contribute beauty to their surroundings and care for the space they share with others.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful lessons is this: beauty deserves our attention and our care.
Through something as simple as placing fresh flowers in water, children experience nature with their hands, develop a sense of responsibility, and discover the quiet joy of making their environment beautiful.
