Session 7 kicks off tomorrow which means that many Heroes, including this one, are spending time tonight setting goals for themselves for their final session of the school year.

The start of a new session reminds me of this quote: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” - Lao Tzu

It’s so powerful to watch young people take charge of their learning and we can’t wait to welcome our world changers back to campus tomorrow ✨

This week the Spark Heroes wrote a letter to the guides asking if they could take over studio maintenance for the office. They self-organized, put together a plan, and pitched their request.

Such a good reminder of what young people are capable of when they’re given trust and space to lead 💕

Session 4 Recap 🎉

Our Spark Heroes continued to explore the season of winter learning about freezing climates, liquids vs solids, and hibernating creatures. They also spent time on engineering activities that put robots into motion. As a tribe they continue to amaze us with their love of learning and civility towards each other.

Our Explorer Studio Heroes dove head first into coding and robotics where they grew their engineering skills and evaluated / debated how robotics and artificial intelligence might shape our future. They then put their learnings into action at exhibition as they got to code their robots on a surprise race course.

What a wonderful session! It’s hard to believe that we’re more than half way through the year.

That’s a wrap on Session 3! 🎉

Our Explorer Studio Heroes spent the session exploring Acton Athens, each taking on the persona of an Ancient Greece God or Goddess 🇬🇷

Our Spark Heroes participated in a kindness challenge where we closed each day discussing different themes of kindness and they gave shout outs to studio mates who had exhibited kindness traits.

For both studios the growth this session has been quite mind blowing 🤯 Our Heroes have grown immensely in their collaboration skills, self reflection, and their imaginations are soaring.

How lucky are we to get to witness these Heroes on their path of finding their calling so that they can have a profound impact on the world? 💪 🌍

WARNING: if you feel uncomfortable with young people playing in the rain and getting as dirty as they want then this is not the post for you 🛑

Our Heroes spend time outside every single day…rain or shine. Time outdoors positively impacts your mood, mental health, and sensory development and free play with friends encourages creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

I wonder what a traditional school schedule might look like if funding was tied to these metrics instead of standardized test scores? 🤔

What a wonderful Exhibition that these young Heroes put on for their families and the community! They spent the past 5 weeks exploring Entrepreneurship during their E-ship Quest and it all culminated with them launching their businesses into the world at yesterday's Exhibition 🚀

They've also been working hard on executive functioning skills by developing SMART goals, effective communication through Memoir writing, and growing their leadership skills.

Cant wait to see how these young people change the world 🌍 💪

Did you know that the average child spends 1,000 hours at school each year? That’s 1/6 of their waking hours and that number doesn’t include homework which, for elementary school, is an additional 170 hours per year.

The question that all of us, as parents, should be asking is this: is that a valuable use of a young persons time?

Question to help you formulate your perspective:

1. Is the traditional education system focused on instilling skills in my child that society values in grown ups?

2. Is the traditional education system focused on instilling skills in my child that I value in grown ups?

Here are 5 ways that we think traditional education is failing the young people on your life 👉🏽

We have a studio contract 🙌🏽

Our Explorer Studio Heroes spent session 1 developing their studio contract. The studio walls were covered with post it notes of contract ideas - all generated by the young people. They would pick contract ideas to trial and then reflect - what was it like to have that as a studio promise? Did it contribute to the culture or take from the culture? Should the promise be moved to the list of final contract promises or do you want to get rid of it?The final contract was then presented at exhibition and signed by all Heroes 🎉

We’re now onto session 2, e-ship! Can’t wait to see what businesses these learners will launch into the world 🚀

We saw a rope, sandbags, and a ladder in the play shed, but our creative Heroes saw a rope swing!

5 reasons that we love loose parts play:

1. Learned led, encouraging independence and confidence.
2. Hands on learning about the early concepts of engineering and physics - weight, density, how things work.
3. Sparks creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
4. Boosts natural curiosity and imaginative play.
5. Motivates calculated risk taking.

Young people are natural learners and playing with loose parts taps into this gift.

What do you think they’ll build next?

The look of pride from our Explorer Studio Heroes as they do a team review of their completed week 1 challenge - shoot a lip synching team building video 🎉

This accomplishment is owned entirely by these determined Creators.

Picture this - you walk into a brand new school, at the start of a new school year, with people you don’t yet know. Your Guide offers you a challenge. They share the rules of the challenge, invite you to participate, and step back. There’s no grown up managing you towards the deadline. Like all heroes, you face dragons on your journey - distraction, procrastination, conflict with fellow travelers. You work to slay these dragons and end up on the other side having not only completed the challenge but also learning so much about yourself and your team along the way. We call that persistence and grit! 💪

What if we reframed how we thought about school and, instead of seeing it as a place that kids NEED to go, we saw it as a place that kids will WANT to go? 🤔

Games are an easy way to level up the fun in learning. Many might look at this photo and see kids playing Monopoly, but we see brave Spark Heroes who are working hard on math, strategy, reading, and patience.

Learning doesn’t need to look like worksheets and standardized tests…and it rarely will when you’re at a school that believes learning should be fun 🥳

This is the book that changed it all for our family. Oliver and I were so moved and inspired after reading this book that we had two options as a family:

Option A: Move to a city with an Acton academy so that our children could experience this wonderful and innovative approach to education.

Option B: Stay put and open an Acton Academy here for our own children and the community.

We chose option B, met an amazing co-founding family along the way, and our doors will be opening in September to our courageous founding Heroes and their families 🦸‍♀️

In prep for that opening, I decided to come full circle and reread the book that started it all. It feels different reading it at this point in my journey. I’m noticing things that I didn’t notice the first time and I have a better grasp of the beliefs and systems that are at the center of this learner-driven school house. There’s one thing has remained consistent - my unwavering belief that THIS is the learning model that our kids deserve 👊🏽

Most of us tend to equate genius with one particular measurement of intelligence: IQ

This limiting belief prevents us from appreciating the genius that a wide variety of people hold AND it’s likely preventing you from seeing the genius within yourself💡

👉🏽 to learn about 4 more zones of genius.

At Creator’s House we believe that every single child who walks through our doors is a genius who will change the world. This belief leads to a culture of self discovery where young people are treated like the world changers they are meant to be.

Brains and talent are just the beginning. It's growth mindset, the belief in your ability to develop and improve, that has your intelligence soaring to new heights 🚀

Growth mindset fosters resilience, independence, and fuels a lifelong thirst for learning. It should be central to a 21st century education, not an afterthought 💡

03/09/2023

I was asked this question by a parent the other day and I imagine many families are having similar thoughts so I wanted to share my response.

“All jobs will be affected by AI so it’s not about the job, it’s about the skill set. If you want your child to be AI proof then inspire them to be creative problem solvers, critical thinkers, and great collaborators. Encourage them to find their passions, roll up their sleeves and DO stuff - build a garden bed, start a business, help the neighbor shovel their driveway, etc. The more that our children can think like entrepreneurs (this doesn’t mean that they need to be entrepreneurs), the better they’ll faire in an AI world.”

If ChatGPT has proven anything to me it’s that what we’re building at Creator’s House is spot on with the skills that young people will need to thrive in a 21st century world 💪

To wrap up our 21 Reasons We Love Acton series we leave you with number 21: We love Acton because it is offering our children something different. An approach to education that we believe is best suited for 21st century skills and is focused on fostering a lifelong love of learning, self-discovery, the making of things that matter, and developing the character traits that matter most.

And, with that, we’re just as excited to get to say goodbye to the things that we believe don’t serve our children:
🚫 Standardized tests to measure ability
🚫 Teaching to the averages
🚫 Endless homework
🚫 Fleeting childhood

Hope, adventure, challenge, and the pursuit of transformative innovation is waiting for us in the Acton model and we are so excited to immerse our kids into the freedom that awaits them as they begin their own hero’s journey.

01/23/2023

In the traditional model, teachers spend the majority of their time in the classroom broadcasting content to students. The teachers teach and the students listen. This is counter to a learner driven model so we had to rethink the role of adults.

Our adults are called guides instead of teachers. This simple word choice signifies our purpose of constantly pushing power to children so they learn to claim their true agency as individuals with invaluable potential and worth.

Guides at Creator's House are game makers who propose exciting challenges, set boundaries and invite Heroes to start a life changing journey. Their authority is limited by a Creator-Guide contract that restricts their role to five primary tasks:

1. Guides inspire each Creator on their journey to find their calling that will change the world.

2. Guides are game makers providing challenges, frameworks, tools, and world class examples.

3. Guides hold up a mirror of accountability.

4. Guides shepherd the energy of the community.

5. Guides prepare young Heroes to become the game makers themselves.

The ideal culture of our studios is one where having an adult in the studio is not a requirement for the day to progress. The Heroes are able to lead the studio fully.

Learners at Creator’s House are guided, not taught.

Who says that learning needs to be boring?!

It doesn’t. That’s why we use game design to make learning more fun and to better motivate our learners. In fact, we think of our Guides as game designers. They set the stage for our learners with fun and engaging experiences that look a lot like a game. There is a clear goal, obstacles are experienced along the way, you enlist your friends, you form a team or alliance, and, whether you win or lose, you get up and you want to keep playing.

Game design requires a bit more creativity and more preparation, but it’s worth it because it makes learning more fun, our young heroes are excited to learn, and it makes the learning more MEMORABLE.

01/17/2023

One of the best gifts of joining a community that values growth mindset is that they’re always looking for feedback on how to improve. At Creator's House we host regular town hall meetings - this is in addition to the weekly surveys that our learners are encouraged to fill out. Town halls are a place for our young heroes to come together to voice opinions, share suggestions, give feedback, and listen to one another.

Outside of safety, the children are in charge at Creator's House. They have some of the best, most creative ideas on ways to improve our program and this gathering gives them the power to drive positive change.
