2 Mile Evictees Struggle Amidst Uncertain Future
Blessed are those who give Acts 20:35
- Vincent Numbos
A representative from the 2 Mile evictee community, Ambrose Amen, has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by residents as they await a response to their appeal to the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA). The community, comprised of fourth-generation residents, is grappling with the prospect of relocation with no land to return to in their original provinces.
Despite having donors willing to provide support, progress is hindered by a lack of cooperation from both the community and government bodies. The delay in response from authorities has left vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, to fend for themselves.
“It is more blessed to give than to receive”, states Acts 20:35. We believe in the respect and dignity of all people.
In a gesture of solidarity, Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu, extends temporary food assistance to support the community's immediate needs amidst their struggle. While DBTS has no direct involvement in the land dispute, we stand in solidarity with the people of 2 Mile, undergoing against hunger and hardship.
“It is wonderful that the staff and students, past pupils and parishioners of Mary Help of Christians Sabama have generously reached out to the ones affected. This is our Christian duty that we reach out and ensure that we respect all persons and grow in love and harmony. May the blessings of the Lord be upon each one of you and your families”, said said Fr Ambrose Pereira sdb, Rector Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu.
Staff from DBTI Boroko also joined in the donation drive, spearheaded by Vincent Numbos, and the DBTS Pastoral Team members. Several past pupils and benefactors have reached out to share.
Ambrose Amen was grateful and thanked Don Bosco. He was emotional and didn't speak long. The expression on the people’s faces were evident. They were all thankful. The smiles on the faces of the children and mothers were priceless.
Over the past several weeks we have been hearing of evictions with destruction to homes and property. Several students have been affected as some of them have been residing at those areas. With this turmoil there have been students who have withdrawn for the year 2026.
As we enter the season of Lent in the week ahead, may we open our eyes and our hearts to touch the lives of those we encounter.
Our next trip to the will be on Ash Wednesday, 18th February 2026. All who wish to make donations of food and water, good and clean clothes, ground sheets, etc., can bring them to the Administration office at Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu.
Cash donations can also be deposited in the school account. Please ensure that you state clearly that it is for those evicted.
