Today the Papua LNG joint venture has launched fully-integrated front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the project in PNG.

Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher said it was “a significant step for the project and we are working closely with our partners, the PNG government, communities and local companies to deliver new jobs and help support the local economy.”

When I recently told billionaire Roberto “Bobby” Ongpin that China’s leaders of the past 30 years who rose in the era of visionary Deng Xiaoping and who led the world’s fastest-growing major economy were all engineers, Ongpin was surprised. He admires former China Premier Zhu Rongji and thought he was an economist. No, I said former Premier Zhu Rongji graduated with an electrical engineering degree from Beijing’s prestigious Tsinghua University.

What about China’s other pragmatic and strong-willed leaders? President Hu Jintao is a hydraulic engineering graduate of Tsinghua, his predecessor President Jiang Zemin was an electrical engineering graduate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, while next year the new president of China will be Xi Jinping, a chemical engineering graduate also of Tsinghua University.

China’s incumbent Premier Wen Jiabao studied engineering and geology at Beijing Institute of Geology; a former premier, Li Peng, was electrical engineering graduate of Moscow Power Engineering Institute; and the current China National People’s Congress Chairman Wu Bangguo is an electron tube engineering graduate of Tsinghua University.

Maybe we should elect engineers, too, as our leaders, not just lawyers and economists?

Winning in 2023 will require companies to take a radically different approach toward talent management, built on the foundations of operational flexibility. It is time to come together and forge a new path for the future of work.

It can be denied that most of roads condition in Papua New Guinea is worst. It is because
maintenance works is not properly conducted because of insufficiently, unsustainably, and
inconsistency on allocating budget for maintenance. Insufficient or uncertain budgetary allocations
to road maintenance have resulted in road deterioration that has significantly increased production
and transport costs. To avoid this problem, highway professionals advocate the establishment of
dedicated road funds, managed by independent road boards made up of road user representatives.
So far roads maintenance in Papua New Guinea is financed using the government budget allocation. It is
difficult to give guarantee to the sustainable road maintenance if the finance for road maintenance
takes from the government budget allocation. Therefore in this paper will be introduced road fund,
the road maintenance funding system widely used in some countries that road conditions can be
well maintained. The conclusion is that the road fund needs to be applied to maintenancethe road in
PNG.

Building roads will paved way to prosperity for Southern Highlander's in the next 5 to 10 years if our Provincial and the local MPs are serious in alleviating peverty in the rural areas.
