Indeed, we are still heart broken from the great loss our nation has experienced losing our dear 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐒𝐢𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞.
Sir Somare was a great man with deep roots to his culture. He united a land of ~860 languages, hundreds of tribes and different shades of melanin. He cherished the land's zast by making sure that PNG stayed true to itself by keeping its cultures and traditions alive.
Sir Somare truly loved Papua New Guinea till his last breath.
In honor of what our founding father has done, BSA is encouraging everyone to appreciate and take pride in their culture by observing
𝐓𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐲.
In the early days following the Independence of PNG, a Toana Day was proposed by the State to encourage cultural appreciation. This is a day where everyone wears his or her customary dress or 'bilas' (i.e decorative finery) one day of the week; usually every Friday. Toana is the motuan word for symbol or design. These days, Toana wear refers to traditional inspired contemporary PNG dress.
Come to classes in your Toana wear and be a proud Papua New Guinean on the 19th.

“My fondest memory of Tunga, was going to his house in Wewak and walking through his flower garden. There were exotic orchids to mangoes to practically anything. He would give you a mango and tell you the story of how he got the seed and planted it. He loved his plants.”
~Julie-Anne Waranaka
The Biology Students Association of UPNG planted trees today in memory of our Grand Chief, Sir Michael Somare. With the guidance of our patron Dr Augustine Mungkaje and matron Dr Vidiro Gei and assistance of Rtd Col Fred Aikung and Terry Baur, we planted up to 11 trees today outside the Natural Sciences Resource Centre, UPNG. Three specific trees were chosen and planted by each year group (2nd, 3rd and 4th) in honour of our Grand Chief. We have challenged each year group to take on the responsibility of nurturing their planted trees so that the memory the Grand Chief will live on.

A Happy Belated International Day of Women and Girls in Science
We shout out to all the female scientists who passed out from UPNG Biological Sciences, to those yellow jackets and white coats women who are proud and passionate to use their skills to change PNG and the WORLD. And to those in the future who will follow in their footsteps.
Science, Technology and Research are made better when women are at the table.
