Evoking Passion & Pursuing Potential in each person
"Follow the Child" - Maria Montessori

This is what homeschooling should look like for a 6 year old - learning through play. Not sitting still at a desk, keeping quite and writing in books for 6 hours nonstop, everyday for 5 days. What I've described is what a typical early childhood education centre in PNG looks like. Tell me if I'm wrong because I would love to know that that isn't true.

As a family whose customised homeschool curriculum includes conservation because we have an aspiring herpetologist in the family, it's great to see such initiatives going on in PNG.
We are looking to see where our future herpetologist could make an impact in PNG so to get involved with such projects would be an invaluable experience to participate in and grow in this field of study for my teenager.

That's basically it, I wouldn't have said it better nor have it any other way. 💯

We're just about beginning our 8th year of home educating and the joy & reward of this lifestyle goes way beyond what is taught and seen by the visible eye. We are often misunderstood and thought at times either to be crazy or on the other hand amazing, better-than-the-average parents doing something extraordinary, but the truth is we're simply doing what called us - the human race- to do which is to "be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, subdue it and have dominion".
We've chosen to disciple our children ourselves and take ownership over their education rather than outsourcing it which is what was the norm before the introduction of the modern (i wouldn't call it modern 🤔) mass public school system in the 1700- 1800s.

With homeschooling, its not always smooth sailing, but what part if life is 🤷🏽‍♀️
We just hunker down and do what we've been tasked to do and trust God to do the rest. The fruit of the seeds we've sown will bear fruit in due season regardless of the changing weather.

I have been homeschooling for almost 23 years now. It remains to be one of the best parenting decisions Edric and I ever made. Although each day has its challenges, this is the life that I imagined for my kids, for our family. It’s what God called our family to.

I have said this to parents many times. Homeschooling doesn’t make anyone a better parent. In fact, it probably brings out the worst in a parent! Patience and perseverance are definitely tested! But when God calls parents to homeschool, he most certainly provides the ability and grace to do so (as well as the patience).

Why do we continue to homeschool?
We love being together!
Edric and I want to raise our kids to love, know, obey, serve, and worship God without having to deal with competing values and influences.
We want our children to have lots of time to play and explore beyond books.
We want to travel the world together without being held back by a school calendar.
We want to be present in our kids everyday moments and milestones and answer their heart questions.
We want them to develop convictions and godly character.
We want to raise independent learners and discerning thinkers.

Some people may think we are crazy for not sending our kids to school in their pre-school, elementary, and high school years. I also think we are!

Schools have a lot of benefits that we can’t replicate at home. Even so, I won’t trade all the years we have had and continue to have with our kids. (It also helps that we belong to a large community of homeschoolers for group learning and collaborative experiences, and opportunities for athletics.)

During hard days when I wonder if we did the right thing or wonder if my kids would have better opportunities if they went to school, I actually ask my older sons who are in college…”Should we send your siblings to school?”

They say, “No, mom! You should keep homeschooling them.” And they correct me, give suggestions and ideas, and encourage me to keep going.

So I am still here. I don’t know when this journey will end for me as a homeschool mom. My mindset is: treasure each day, show up, and trust God for the future fruit that I don’t always see. ❤️

Getting an education is not limited to a college or university campus, let alone classroom or lecture halls. Not having gone into higher education or institutions doesn't define our intellectual capabilities nor does it tell people who we are as a person or portray our identity in what we find our worth in.
This is something that becoming a homeschooling family had taught us - that an "education" or in the literal translation of its original word in Greek - "drawing forth of potential" is definitely not limited to the four walls of a building nor can it happen only between 6 and 24 years old.
Education is a lifelong journey of evoking our passions and pursuing our potential.
