Female seafarers make an impression
By Sylvester Wemuru
Rai Coast MP and Vice Minister for International Trade and Investment Kessy Sawang was impressed to see young women studying at the PNG Maritime College.
MP Sawang was part of the visiting party with Australian High Commissioner to PNG His Excellency Jon Philp and Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa.
She said as a woman, it is pleasing to see young women choosing to be seafarers.
There are currently six women studying at the college. One is an Engineer Cadet, three are Class Three Officers, one is a doing General Purpose, and another is a Class Two Officer.
The women collectively said it is a challenging when they entered the institution for the first time, but eventually it became home and they look forward to being part of the seafarers’ family.
MP Sawang said she is happy with the support of the Australian government through the AusAid program in the education space, especially with training and infrastructure.
She was equally pleased with H.E Philp’s visit to Madang and hopes many good things will come from this visit.
