🎉 MESA Holds Its First General Meeting of 2025!

On 16th July 2025, the Mining Engineering Students’ Association (MESA), under the leadership of the 2025 Executive Team, successfully convened its First General Meeting of the academic year.

🔍 Focused on Transparency & Accountability
The Annual General Meeting served as a vital platform to present detailed reports from all student-led committees and financial updates, reinforcing MESA’s commitment to openness and trust within the student body.

🗣 Student Voices Heard
Members had the opportunity to share feedback, raise concerns, and propose ideas to further enhance the association—strengthening collaboration between the executive team and the student community.

🏆 Celebrating Excellence
We also honored the top three (3) speakers from last semester’s Annual School of Mining Debate, who will represent our school at the upcoming Intra-Faculty Debate Challenge against other engineering schools at PNG University of Technology.

A strong start to the semester, reflecting MESA’s dedication to engagement, accountability, and student success! 💪🏛

We were honored to have Bertha Mange, an accomplished Mine Planning Engineer with Lihir Newmont Corporation, visit the Mining Engineering Department on the 15th of April for a masterclass with our students. A proud Unitech alumna, Bertha graduated in 2015 and has since built an impressive career spanning 11 years with Lihir. Her journey has taken her to the Brisbane office in Australia, where she continues to demonstrate leadership and versatility.

Bertha’s engagement with our students was deeply inspiring. She shared invaluable insights from her journey, blending technical mastery with an understanding of business and people.

When asked why she volunteered to offer this masterclass to the mining engineering department, she shared that she was driven by quality. Bertha emphasized that quality is an often-overlooked element in PNG’s mining industry but one that defines success on the international stage. She felt a responsibility to inform the next generation of mining engineers about this vital principle.

MESA deeply appreciates opportunities like this and looks forward to welcoming more alumni who can inspire and guide the next generation of mining engineers!

On March 22, 2025, the Mining Engineering Students' Association (MESA) at the PNGUoT hosted an insightful, fully student-led Industrial Training Talk, where senior students shared their industrial training experiences at various mining sites.
These presentations provided invaluable first-hand knowledge, offering perspectives on the realities of working in the mining sector. With a focus on technical excellence, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability, our students continue to uphold the core values of our department, ensuring they are well-equipped for the evolving industry landscape.

We extend our gratitude to Moses Aina Kuman (BEMN-4), Emmanuel Winura (BEMP-4), and Jaydel Morris (BEMP-4) for sharing their experiences at St. Barbara Limited - Simberi, Ok Tedi Mining Limited Limited, and K92 Mining Inc. , respectively. A special appreciation also goes to Naomi Kawagle (BEMN-4), Joshua Harrison (BEMN-3), and Graham Jonah (BEMP-4), who provided insights into their time at New Porgera Limited, showcasing diverse perspectives from their shared industrial training. Their contributions serve as inspiration for the next generation of mining engineers.

This initiative aligns with our goal of preparing industry-ready professionals who are not only technically proficient but also innovative thinkers and ethical leaders in the mining sector. As we continue to foster connections between academia and industry, we invite potential employers and industry leaders to engage with our talented students.

⛏️✨
Over the past two days (March 20-21), the Mining Engineering Department had the privilege of hosting an insightful masterclass led by Bradley Vali, a 2013 graduate and now Senior Drill & Blast Engineer at Newmont-Lihir Operations.

Taking time off from his break, Bradley shared his industry experience with 3rd & 4th-year students, providing invaluable lessons on real-world mining operations. Inspired by his late mentor, Dr. G. Arpa, he finally fulfilled a long-time goal of giving back to the department that shaped his career.

His sessions not only enhanced our technical knowledge but also gave final-year students the chance to discuss their end-of-year projects.

MESA is truly grateful for opportunities like this and hopes to see more alumni returning to inspire and mentor future mining engineers!
