Last week we had the pleasure to run our traditional by now Christmas Research Seminar. It is always delightful to see the progress of our postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students and intern, in topics ranging from the development of sustainable biomaterials, sustainable management of weeds in agroecosystems, biological control in forestry, developing heritage wheat varieties, bringing added value to Irish grains, to the application of analyses of nematode communities to peatland restoration efforts, to soil health in built environments and to the development of sustainable fertilisers.
Many thanks to all our petals for their great work and efforts, to our University South East Technological University Dept of Applied Science Carlow and funding bodies Interreg North-West Europe (NWE), Research Ireland, Higher Education Authority, Teagasc, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Green Restoration Ireland for their support that enables us to do our research and help develop the next generation of scientists in the field.

Huge congratulations to Dr. Mutian Wang who successfully defended his PhD work this week. The title of his thesis is "Microbial Community Dynamics, Strain Selection, and Functional Bacterial Consortia for the Bioremediation of Petroleum-Contaminated Soil". His supervisors were Dr. Kieran Germaine and Dr. David Dowling and his examiners were Prof. Aizhong Ding ( Beijing Normal University) and Dr. Guiomar Garcia- Cabellos (SETU). His work looked at the changes in microbial community structure in petrochemical contaminated soils in response to inoculation with oil degrading bacteria 🎓

Members of the Molecular Ecology and Nematode Research Group of enviroCORE participated today in the launch of a pioneering inter- and trans-disciplinary , led by Dr Lisa Moran (TUS) and Prof Adam Maltese (Indiana University). The project was presented as a case study of research by Ms Alejndra Vieyra-Ramirez and Dr Thomaé Kakouli-Duarte, which integrates , , and for .

This was a truly stimulating meeting with world experts in transdisciplinary research and a great forum to question discipline specific research and norms. Great to see THEA representation as well!
