Carlow Martial Arts Sanctuary has been devoted to the practice of Wing Chun since 2002 under Sifu Brian Whelan.

Tuesday: Children’s class 5 years of age and over 6:00pm-7:15pm

Tuesday: Adults wing chun- Practical street self defence and traditional KUNG FU: 7:30pm-9:00pm

This Tuesday 10th 7:30-9pm is an introduction class to wing chun martial arts night for those interested in training, but who aren’t sure what to expect.

On the night come yourself or with a friend and experience an open session to watch, train, and experience Wing Chun Kung Fu.
The class is open class with all levels of experience welcome.

The class will consist of warm up exercises to relax the body, pad work to help release tension and condition your body followed by practical self defence moves to help bring you confidence in your everyday life.

The open class is €5 per person (this is a reduced rate for the night). For anyone interested bring a bottle of water and wear comfy clothes that allow movement.

The Carlow martial arts sanctuary is delighted to welcome everyone back next Tuesday 20th of January 2026 🙌 at Gaelscoil Eoghain Uí Thuairisc, Tullow Rd, Carlow, Co Carlow

Last year was a fantastic year of training and let’s continue to build on that in 2026.

The kids and adult classes are open to new members joining with classes on a Tuesday at times below:

Kids class 6-7:15pm
Adults class 7:30-9pm

For parents interested in the kids class it involves exercise circuits, pad work, forms, partner drills, light sparring (only when the student has a number of months of training and is interested in sparring) and competition training (for those interested).

The adults classes involve exercise drills, self defence skills, pad work, partner drills, light sparring and competition prep (only for those interested in competition).

Before the summer break a number of adults class members passed their first scroll exam after months of consistent training, dedication and hard effort. Well done to them all 😇

After a fantastic year of training we are coming to the Christmas holidays and with that the club will be closing as usual until January. Tonight will be the last training session of the year returning on Tuesday the 14th of January 2025.

We would like to thank all of our students for putting in the work during training throughout the year, the parents for their on going support and the assistant coaches along with Brian our head coach.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday period and looking forward to seeing you back in the new year 🙏🤩

Carlow Martial Arts Sanctuary is back after a long summer break on Tuesday the 10th of September 🤩.

6-7:30pm kids class
7:30-9pm adults class

We hope everyone enjoyed the summer holidays and is feeling rested coming into the new school year. We are officially back training on the 10th of September every Tuesday in the Gaelscoil, Ashgrove, Carlow town R93 PX92.

We offer a tester class where you can try out the class before making any commitment to see if it’s something you’d like to continue.

Well done to everyone at the Novice Competition over Easter 🐣

Congrats to all novices who competed at the competition. It was a great day and a chance to explore the competition side of training (which is a small optional aspect of our training).

With Christmas coming up the last class of the year is this coming Tuesday the 12th of December and class will resume on Tuesday the 16th of January.

It’s been a great year of training for the club and we would like to thank the students coming to class and giving your all in training. To the parents for consistently supporting your kids and bringing them to classes. To the coaches for helping facilitating the classes and Brian for creating the space for us to practice martial arts and become more disciplined versions of ourselves 🙏

Another huge success for the students of the Carlow martial arts sanctuary who competed in the karate Ireland national championship this past Sunday. Everyone has been training hard throughout the year and it was a fantastic end to competition season.

Brian Keating won silver in team kata, bronze in individual kata and gold in kumite. Brian is now national champion two years running in kumite as well as being a European kumite champion🏆all under the guidance of sifu/sensei Brian Whelan at the carlow martial arts sanctuary.

Sean Foley won gold in kata and bronze in kumite.

Marco Fusco-Devito won bronze in Kata

Anthony Corcoran won gold in both kata and kumite being a national champion in these’s two categories two years running now.

And not forgetting Blake Keating performing very well in both kata and kumite. A big thank you to the parents and coaches for their support on Sunday and throughout the year 🙏.

Competition is something students in the club can participate in, but it’s just a small aspect of training in the school.

Congratulations to Brian Keating, Brian Keating Junior and Marco Frisco-Devito who represented Ireland on behalf of the Carlow martial arts sanctuary in the European championships in Slovenia two week ago.

Brian Keating Junior secured two gold and one silver medals in both individual and team events.

Both Brian and Marco are training on the national Irish team for the world championship in Argentina next year.

Also best of luck next weekend to our members going to the national karate championship in Waterford.
