I don't know if anyone elses algorithm kept showing the aftermath of people hopping themselves in those zara pants this summer but I have to say I felt very vindicated. Fast fashion often doesn't look at human proportions it seems and so I have spent a lot of time taking up, or in pants. The easiest no sew way is hem tape which just irons on. Shown here is second hand pants that I've worn almost to death, and how even though I've never got around to sewing in any reinforcement it's held just fine!

If you want to learn a little bit more about mending and altering your own clothes there's a few free workshops coming up including next Monday with Carlow County Council

I've finally gotten around to harvesting those early potatoes I planted back in March and this tray bake was actually worth turning on the air fryer in this heat đŸ˜‚ halloumi, potatoes and peaches with sundried tomato oil (I save it for dishes like this) zataar, lemon, oregano, coriander and lemon verbena among other pantry staples. I love finding uses for things like the oil for sundried tomatoes that might otherwise end up in the compost - never down my sink- and wasted! What uses are you getting out of your pantry byproducts?

On Sundays we make bread- or rather I am in the middle of a 3 day process to make sourdough bread. Does it have to be that long? No. But over the last year the routine has really grounded me. In a year that included 2 hospital procedures, multiple hospital visits and becoming (temporarily) too visually impaired to drive as the highlight reel I have been clinging to routines like this. And bonus the fruits of my labour that I have been able to give to the amazing people around me who put me back on the road to recovery. So I haven't quite dropped off the face of the earth but social media did take a back seat. Expect as I slowly come back to see lots of crumb shots and garden pics. That's all my camera roll is full of!

Got asked this week how I manage to eat zero waste and for once my answer has a thing. My pressure cooker and I are BFFs. It lets me cook my brown rice in 17 mins and I can batch cook beans, quinoa, stews etc for use during the week or to freeze so I can have instant microwavable meals. Meal prep like this streamlines my week and takes pressure off too. I have chronic illness and some days can't stand to cook or just plain old too tired to make even a decision to eat. But breakfast is made- chia in this case, lunch is sorted- carrot salad and tofu, grain is on standby and there's an already cooked legume that I can use like canned. Some of this will top up the freezer and in general just one thing off the to do list so that I'm not looking at dry beans when it comes to dinner time.

A reminder that biodiversity solutions don't need to be high tech or pretty. Just like us our insect life needs access to water. Make sure they can access water easily without risking falling in. My model here is being very dramatic as there is a very graduated slope to the water on the other side of this metal lid but it does make for better photo angles. You can add marbles to a bowl or gravel if you wanted either. For ponds rocks and plants that give a platform rather than a sheer insect cliff are also great!

Opened the news to doom and gloom, planted even more potatoes. At least we'll be well fed at the end of the world.
