First up in our Meet the Lab Technicians series is Kristin Batan, our Brewing Technician!

You’ll find Kristin in Lab C326 – the Brewing Lab, where she’s on hand to support students with their practical work.

Remember: Students cannot enter a laboratory without a technician or lecturer present.

And if you were looking for Kristian, you’ll find her in office C315!

Fourth-year Pharmaceutical and Drug Formulations student Georgia Shiels.
Applying analytical chemistry techniques to Detection and Quantification of Explosive Nitro-aromatic compunds in soil.
This project focuses on the extraction and analysis of nitroaromatic contaminants using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), a key technique for identifying and quantifying environmentally persistent compounds.
These images highlight key stages of the laboratory process, including soil sample preparation, solvent extraction, and chromatographic analysis. The resulting data allows for the identification of target compounds and comparison across different concentration standards, supporting accurate environmental assessment.
This work demonstrates the application of analytical chemistry techniques to real-world environmental challenges, providing valuable hands-on experience in laboratory and data analysis skills.

Many thanks to the Army Ordnance Corps for delivering an excellent and highly engaging talk to our 1st year Bioscience students at SETU, sharing invaluable insights from their experiences in Lebanon and the scientific principles underpinning post‑blast analysis.
This real‑world perspective greatly enriched our Current Concept Module curriculum and provided students with a unique glimpse into the role science plays in Defence and security contexts. of Science SETU Carlow

They met our 3rd and 4th year students as part of the Current Trends in Biopharmaceutics module delivered by Dr Damien Brady.
