This is your average Tuesday at Alento📍

No competition footage.
No belt promotions.
No highlights.

Just the room.

This is Open Mat.

A chance to roll, drill, experiment, and train with people you might not normally partner with during class.

No instructor leading from the front.
No set curriculum.

Just a room full of people choosing to spend their evening getting a little bit better.

It’s one of the things that turns an academy into more than just a place to train.

Open Mat is available to members once they’ve built a foundation through regular classes.

If you’re new to Jiu Jitsu, start with Beginners.
If you’ve trained before, jump straight into All Levels.

Both can be booked through our website.

Earned, not given🥋

Over 20 years of hard work, discipline, setbacks, growth, and relentless commitment led to this moment.

Two huge milestones.

Belts don’t represent time alone.

They represent sacrifice, consistency, and the decision to keep showing up when most people quit.

Massive congratulations to Charles and Tom - these promotions truly reflect what Jiu Jitsu is all about.

Respect the journey.

The Blue Belt Problem 🔵

Where most people stop.

This is where Jiu Jitsu changes.

The fast progress slows down.
The easy wins disappear.
And you start to see how much you still don’t know.

You’re not a beginner anymore…
but you’re still getting caught.

That’s where frustration creeps in.
That’s where people start to question it.

But this phase isn’t a setback.
It’s the shift.

The people who keep going stop chasing wins.
They focus on understanding, consistency, and showing up anyway.

That’s what separates those who quit… from those who progress.

Keep turning up. That’s the difference 🥋

What BJJ teaches you faster than the gym.

The gym builds your body.

Jiu Jitsu builds how you respond under pressure.

You learn to stay calm when things aren’t going your way.

You build confidence by doing hard things, not avoiding them.

You get humbled, and come back better.

You show up, even on the days you don’t feel like it.

And you start to trust the process.

This is where real growth happens.

If you’ve been thinking about starting, this is your sign.

5 habits that will improve your Jiu Jitsu fast 💨

Most people think progress comes from learning more techniques.

It doesn’t.

It comes from how you train every time you step on the mat.

1. Keep showing up

Consistency beats intensity. One great session every now and then will never outperform steady training week after week.

2. Focus on good posture

Posture solves problems before they start. It helps your balance, protects you in bad positions, and makes your attacks and escapes more effective.

3. Stop avoiding uncomfortable positions

If you’re afraid of losing position or getting submitted, you’ll stay stuck. Some of your biggest lessons come when things are going wrong. Bad spots teach calmness, timing, awareness, and resilience.

4. Don’t avoid higher belts

Rolling with people better than you is one of the fastest ways to improve. You won’t always enjoy it, but you will learn from it. Higher belts expose the gaps in your game and show you what good Jiu Jitsu feels like.

5. Train to learn, not to protect your ego

Take risks. Try new things. Make mistakes. If all you do is cling to what feels safe, your progress slows down. Growth comes when you’re willing to fail, adjust, and go again.

The people who improve the fastest are rarely the most talented.

They’re the ones with the best habits.

Build these into your training and your Jiu Jitsu will change quickly.

Gi or No-Gi? 👀

Even at the highest level, there’s no clear answer.

Both are just different ways of training.

Some prefer the gi for the control, the grips, and the technical depth.

Others prefer no-gi for the pace and movement.

Neither is better. They’re just different.

The important part is starting.

Once you’re on the mats, you’ll figure out what suits you.

Nothing to see here 👀

Just ordinary sessions doing what they tend to do 🔥

You arrive with your head full.
You train for an hour.
You leave calmer than you expected.

😌

Not fixed.
Not transformed.
Just grounded again.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu doesn’t need to be intense to be valuable.

Sometimes the biggest shift is simply stepping away from the noise for a while.

Beginning Monday 2nd February, we’re introducing a small timetable update.

The main change is a 30-minute sparring session added to the end of our mixed-level class.

Monday evening

• All Levels Class: 7.00–8.00pm
• Sparring: 8.00–8.30pm

You’re welcome to attend the class as normal.

Please note that sparring is only available to those who attend the class first and cannot be attended on its own.

Friday morning

• Open Mat: 10.00–11.00am

This session will run depending on attendance, and we ask everyone using the mat to help ensure it’s cleaned properly afterwards.

Important date note

There will be no adults class on Saturday 7th February

If you have any questions about the update or which sessions are right for you, just from a message 📲
