Parent Review: Parliament Crèche

More info.:
For little ones aged 6 weeks to 5 years
Tues- Thurs 9-6pm
NB: Children of parliament workers obviously get priority. But this is open to visitors too. Busiest 11am-1pm.
Book one day ahead. Or at last session.

What we loved:

- Huge range of play facilities (sand pits, climbing frame, kitchen areas, loads of vehicles etc. etc.)

- Experienced professional staff

- Parent or carer stays in the building - it's dry and has a café, wifi, exhibitions and sight seeing opps plus political debates on screens. Stay tuned into political life!

- Totally secure - airport-like check in...

- wifi and foyer so you can work, read or catch up with people

- Almost unbelievably, this service is free for up to 3 hours per day or 4 hours if booking once in a week.

- For Under 5s incl. babies (good first steps before nursery)

NB: There is also an outdoors with plenty of equipment but kids need to be taken there by staff, so not free flow. You take your own (nut-free etc.) snacks if needed. Water provided.

Creating Cargilfield’s Reading Culture 08/06/2024

Does your child's school prioritise reading? If so, how?

Books take a child out of their little world, challenging them to think critically, empathise etc.

They also give a child the words needed to
express themselves WELL,
ask good questions &
advocate for a
better world.

Great tips from The Bear & The Fox as to what’s on and free, but needs booking at this year.

I was very excited to attend the launch of the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2024 programme launch last night, which as always includes a children's programme with a fab line-up of authors, illustrators and performers. As well as the paid children's events (which are mostly £6, with some exceptions), there is also a host of free events to choose from, making the Book Festival accessible to all.

I've written a wee round-up of all the free events, including which ones you need to pre-book and which ones you can just drop-in to, in my latest blog post here >>

Or you can browse the full Children's Programme on the Edinburgh International Book Festival's website here >>

Will you be visiting the Edinburgh International Book Festival this year? What are you most looking forward to seeing?

10AM-4PM 7 Days a week

What I loved:

- Fab real coffee at a good £

- Stunning decor
- Good vibes
- Cool black plates from Genware..make food look even better!
- Oooh sweet stuff looks promising ..

Why not walk from the Botanics?!

NB: Good baby changing facities and high chairs at the back. Probs not ideal for toddlers.

Not a bad Roman emperoror?

National Museums Scotland (basement - just discovered!)

Sunday morning stroll up Leith Walk via our favourite Kvasa Bakery to stock up for the week ahead. Love how much more toddler friendly it is with Edinburgh Trams (fewer cars?)

Sadly toddler managed to wolf down almost all of OUR ?? cinnamon bun (got distracted). 😢

Parent Rec: Patina Bakery & 'Grounds'!

Where: By Edinburgh Park Central Tram Stop (5 min. walk max.)

When? 9am - 3.30pm 7 days/week (parent-friendly summary!)

More info:

A spontaneous trip to escape the rain, which finally stopped. (Thank you to that parent who recommended it!)

What we loved:

- Loads of safe toddler running, buggy wheeling & general moving space

- Easily eat outside n watch little people roam

- Bonny hills in sight!

- Best sandwich I've had in a while. Except perhaps @ Alby's in Leith.

- Fab coffee

- Landscaped modern setting - made a change for us...

- Nice facilities

- Some friendly people

- Good babychino - toddler loved her stylish cup & managed not to smash it!

Need to know:

Not exactly cheap (see photo) but we had fun! Worth taking your own toddler food. Mine wouldn't touch my courgette & ricotta sandwich. (PHEW!)

🌱Being able to think critically (questioning things) is an underrated skill.

Your child may already be better at this than you!

But what exactly is 'critical thinking'?

Scenes from Almond Valley Heritage Centre Reviewed below! ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟

🌱Parent Review: Almond Valley Heritage Centre, Livingston🌱

With toddler aged 2.5

What we loved:

- 40 mins from central Edinburgh in a car. Good free car parking. There was also Wifi in the car park!

- Great to see so many animals up close (chicks- sweet!, goats, shetland ponies, lambs, alpacas, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs & loads more...) Plus pond birds (black swan etc.) Stroking not prohibited - toddler was desperate to stroke a rabbit...but sadly we had no carrot to lure it! (I noticed there were facilities to feed the pond birds! But animal feeding probably NOT welcome for obvious reasons!?)

- Toddler adored the stunning huge explorable train (with slides & tunnel etc.) and made friends inside it. We could have stayed there for hours! This huge arena-like area (lots of steps and chutes inside ideal for slightly older kids) was sheltered and had some fab music making facilities too. Apparently there are plans to develop these facilities the space!

- Heaven for little bouncers (massive jumping pillow, at least 5 large trampolines and bouncy castle)

- Huuuuuuuuge barn full of picnic tables. Next time we'll take a picnic (There is a café too but we are all fussy eaters in our family!) :( I noticed others tucking into burger and chips & there were lots of kiddy options available, plus (the all-important) ice cream tubs (Jude's, Mackie's)

- Go-carts a hit with all of us! But don't forget to adjust yours. There are also tractors with pedals.

- Lots of sand play opportunities in another big barn. (We didn't go in!)

- Fantastic chutes and climbing opps.

- Scenic outdoors - loved hearing and seeing the River Almond.

- We only covered c. 1/3 of the attractions. IDEALLY go for the day!

- If you plan to go a few times, best get a pass. Not cheap at c. £34 for 2 adults and 1 child. But the price makes sense given the range of opportunities on offer. (Animals need to be fed etc.)

- There was an amazing looking real train (a 20-minute ride) and real (old) station. But presumably rides only happen at busy times? There were also good rideable tractor areas ...but the one for Under 5s was closed today.

- There are loads of local history learning opportunities (indoor museum spaces & the old mill & water wheel) for adults and older kids. All useful in wet weather!

- My toddler almost had a tantrum on the way out as the sweets are all low down. (As are toys!) So make a speedy exit!

Parent Rec: 🌱Saughton 1/2 Day Out 🌱

What did we do?

1. 10-10.45 am

- Gym Juniors - Edinburgh Gymnastics Classes Yup, we're addicted. The more we go, the more we 🥰. Different set up each time, plus new toys to find...(we drop in, not members!)

2. 🍦🍦Ummmm after lunch, of course!!

- The Garden Bistro for a much needed ☕ & my 2nd fave 👌Arran Ice Cream (Number 1= Joelato in Stocky B & Bonnie & Wild Market!)

3. Saughton Playground

(See last week's mention)

4. Walked back to Balgreen on Water of Leith path. (Starts opposite playground main entrance.) 🌞🌿🌳🌲🌱

Then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

All the way home. 😊

What toddler and I loved...

- Near 'West End' tram stop. We LOVE trams!
- Lots of lush green grass to run on
- A wooden balancing beam
- Feels really safe
- We LOVE steps & walls!
- Sofa & book/games corner at the back of this stunning cathedral
- Toddler loves exploring the cathedral )(FREE btw- donations welcomed!)
- Friendly people & loos inside
- Shady calm space to wheel a sleeping baby or toddler
- Proximity to The Palmerston if you've got a baby and need a restoring lunch! Not so good with an active toddler. But fab loos with baby changing. Otherwise, there's Cairngorm Coffee (best to take away with a toddler!)
- Near MakeBelieve - The Baby Play Place (new, amazing, open 9-4 daily- review coming up tomorrow!)

Oh, yeah and you meet interesting parents encouraging their kids to think outside the box! (See photo!)

Parent Rec.: 🌱Saughton Park & Gardens 🌱WEST EDINBURGH

- It's on the tram route (hop off at Balgreen and walk 🚶‍♂️) Or park there!

- Short walk to Gym Juniors - Edinburgh Gymnastics Classes (We're not members - we just book as and when!)

- Near Bonnie Barista Café - nice people, good facilities! There's also somewhere in the garden. (Never been!)

- Pretty landscaped gardens with hilly views

- Playground has a long train, several small trampolines and lots more that you don't find in the average one. Only Leith Links as good for us just now. (Toddler 2.5)

- Huge (HOT!) glasshouses in the garden if it rains. Plus loos next door.

- Can be crowded at the weekend. But today (Monday midday) there were just enough toddlers to make social interaction fun! And not many much older children.
