Naming the elephant in the room, but not showing it the door – Reflections on COP28 by Dr Ian Cochran 25/02/2024

: Dr Ian Cochran reflects on COP28 - Naming the elephant in the room, but not showing it the door.

"While only one of close to a hundred agenda items up for discussion at the COP28, the “Global Stocktake” text (now dubbed as the ‘UAE Consensus’) captured the attention of both delegates and those watching from around the world.

The Global Stocktake is an integral part of the architecture of the Paris Agreement agreed to by countries in 2015, requiring stakeholders to ‘take stock’ of progress to achieving collective climate goals. Taking place every five years, COP28 saw the conclusion of the first cycle. This process is seen as important to provide clear signals on how global climate action needs to ‘ratch up’ to put us on a sufficiently ambitious pathway to achieve our collective climate goals."

Extreme weather influencing mortgage payments 23/02/2024

: Extreme weather influencing mortgage payments🌪️

When cyclones and floods hit populated areas, people’s ability to pay their mortgage differs depending on the type and intensity of the extreme weather.

Research led by Raffaella Calabrese shows that the more powerful the cyclone, the greater the chance that borrowers will miss or delay mortgage payments. The likelihood of borrowers defaulting on payments or being discouraged from paying off a mortgage early can also increase with heavy rain – particularly in flood-prone areas such as along coastlines.

Theorising international business in Africa: A roadmap 17/02/2024

: Theorising international business in Africa: A roadmap

International business in Africa is a complicated landscape, combining vast ethno-linguistic differences and variation in country size, scale, and wealth, with late-onset internationalisation and recent growth in interest from foreign powers.

For the first time, new research by Kenneth Amaeshi has recategorised multinational enterprises into ‘Advanced’ (from high-income previous colonial and non-colonial countries), ‘Emerging’ (from middle-income countries both inside and outside the region) and ‘Nascent’ (from low-income African countries).
