Praise is easy. Being specific is what sticks.

Most of us reach for “well done” because it is quick and kind. It is both. It just lands on the result and stops there.

These seven phrases land on the child instead: the effort, the retry, the moment they went back to something hard.

One of them (“you’re not there yet”) feels wrong the first time you say it. It is the one parents come back and tell me about.

None of them take longer than four seconds.
