The Medical Student Council is an elected group of students from all six year groups who represent the medical school on college and university wide platforms. We are here to improve student experience and advocate on your behalf. All medical students are invited to attend MSC meetings and have the right to run and vote in our elections to ensure a representative and inclusive committee. Any student can confidentially approach the MSC with any concerns using the contact details below. Student Representation:
The primary role of the MSC is to represent the views and interests of students. Our committee is elected by the student body each year to act as an interface between staff and students and to bring to the attention of the medical school the opinions of its students. Staff members and university groups often approach the MSC to gain an insight into the medical student experience and ask for advice about new initiatives. We meet on a monthly basis to collate feedback and discuss appropriate courses of action. Any issues, whether work related, personal or ethical, can be confidentially brought to the attention of the MSC who will do our best to resolve them. All MSC projects and their outcomes are documented on LEARN so that students can follow up on topic that is currently being pursued. The MSC acts in the interest of all students to improve academic and personal wellbeing whilst at medical school. Community and Wellbeing:
The MSC hosts some of the largest social nights in the medical school calendar and organises a series of themed events through the calendar year for medics to wine and dine with their peers and staff. The highlight of the year for many is the Annual Medical School Ball, the largest university ball that brings together students from all year groups for a night of glitz and glamour. Along with more informal gatherings, these provide students an opportunity to relax and socialise outside of an academic environment and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Teaching and Attainment
Members of the MSC committee have a seat on various academic boards and regularly meet with staff to feedback about teaching experiences and assessment. This feedback and discussions help facilitate small changes to the delivery of material and large changes to the curriculum. We also work with NHS Medical Education Scotland to ensure Edinburgh students receive high quality teaching and academic opportunities across local and peripheral placements, in line with the other Scottish Medical Schools. The MSC are also here to help support students through their exams and assessment by producing and delivering up-to-date, module approved revision materials and tutorials. Our Annual Debate series also engages students in discussions around the latest scientific, ethical or social matters affecting healthcare and allows students to consider topics critically and present coherent arguments. Sports and Societies:
The MSC also manages all of the medical school sports teams and student societies that are not registered with the university student association. There are a huge number of medical societies focused around academics, volunteering or advocacy to which our committee can offer advertisment, support and funds to. To promote good mental and physical wellbeing, the MSC also organises a series of intra and interschool sporting events including SNIMS. Medic Sport provides a great opportunity to integrate a sport into your busy study regime or to try a new activity in an inclusive and supportive environment
