Did you know?

Your brain can physically change after less than an hour of learning a language.

For a long time, neuroscientists assumed brain structure only shifted after weeks or months of sustained learning — that's what most MRI studies had shown.

But a newer imaging study set out to test something much shorter: could the brain change after a single lesson?

Researchers taught participants a small set of new vocabulary — just flower names — in under an hour, then scanned their brains using a specialised imaging technique sensitive to tissue microstructure.

The result: measurable changes appeared in the exact brain regions responsible for language and reading, and the people who learned the words fastest showed the biggest changes.

This is the first real evidence that the brain can restructure itself after a single short burst of focused learning — not weeks, not months. Less than an hour of high-effort mental work was enough to leave a measurable trace in the cortex.

What better reason to learn a language?

At Speak Out Languages, you can learn or improve your Spanish, Italian, French, German, Polish or Arabic with us.

Did you know? 🇮🇹

You're already speaking a little Italian — every time you talk about music.

It's the language of music. Most classical musical terms — allegro, crescendo, piano, tempo, forte, adagio — are Italian, and musicians use them worldwide regardless of their own native language. A French violinist, a Japanese conductor, and a Brazilian pianist will all write "allegro" on the same page of sheet music.

That's not a coincidence. Italy was the birthplace of opera and the centre of European musical innovation from the Renaissance onwards, so when composers needed a shared vocabulary for tempo, dynamics, and expression, Italian became the default — and it just stuck, becoming the universal language of the concert hall.

It fits, too, that the language behind so much musical precision is also famously expressive — Italians even have a "dictionary" of over 250 documented hand gestures, each with its own specific meaning.

So next time you see "crescendo" or "piano" written down, you're reading Italian — no translation needed, anywhere in the world.

If you'd like to take your Italian off the music page and into the real world — get in touch! We've got classes at all levels starting in September!
