For Giving Tuesday, St Mary's Music School Head of Primary Yvonne Jarron talks about what makes the School so unique:

"Hi, I am Yvonne Jarron, and like many of my colleagues, I wear many hats at St Maryโ€™s Music School. I am proud to be the Head of Primary, the coordinator for Support for Learning, I am also responsible for Guidance from P5 โ€“ S2 and last but certainly not least, the liaison rep between the School and cathedral.
Before teaching here I was a parent of a chorister pupil, which gave me an insight into how original and special the School was. Having taught here for 11 years I can safely state that St Maryโ€™s Music School is like no other school I have ever worked in. We take pride in being a small, friendly, and close-knit community where every face is a familiar one. At the core of our unique identity is a love of music.
In our small School, class sizes are not just numbers they are opportunities. Opportunities for connection, understanding and personal growth. The intimacy of our classrooms allows for more than just education; it allows for relationships to flourish and for every student to receive the attention they need to thrive academically and personally.
It is no mere coincidence that our school regularly achieves some of the best academic grades in Scotland. This success is a testament to the small, supportive learning environment that we share.
Our school is not defined solely by academic success; it is a sanctuary for musical exploration and expression. Our pupils are immersed in a musical journey that includes daily instrument and chorister practice, music theory and history of music classes. Other opportunities provided are playing in different ensembles to regular performances within our school and public facing venues.
Our School stands as a unique centre of learning in Scotland, and I am forever proud to say I teach here."

On behalf of St Mary's Music School's Board of Trustees, Janine Watson would like to say thank you this Giving Tuesday to all of the School's supporters.

"Hi, My name is Janine Watson and Iโ€™m on the Board of St Maryโ€™s. I just wanted to say a big thank you to the parents, the donors, the Friends, the grants and foundations, and also the companies who advertise in our programme. Without your support, it wouldnโ€™t be possible to provide this really unique education to the pupils of St Maryโ€™s. As a musician and parent myself, I attended a specialist music school in England, and I know just how unique this experience really is. Not only at nurturing the students in music, but also in life generally. Thank you very much, on behalf of St Maryโ€™s for all your support."

This Giving Tuesday St Mary's Music School Headteacher, Dr Kenneth Taylor, would like to say a huge thank you to all of the School's supporters.

"Iโ€™d like to say thank you to everyone that supports St Maryโ€™s Music School. It is thanks to our donors, Friends and supporters that weโ€™re able to offer such a unique education to our talented young musicians. Our supporters help us to fund everything from masterclasses with renowned international musicians to giving our pupils an extensive range of performing opportunities. From tuning our fleet of almost forty pianos, to ensuring we can attract the very best teachers right across every subject area in the School. It is thanks to your generosity, along with the support from the Scottish Government Aided Places Scheme and St Maryโ€™s Episcopal Cathedral that the specialist music education that we offer here is affordable to all of our families. St Maryโ€™s Music School really is a unique and very special place. Thank you for playing your part in helping us ensure that we can give the very best education to the professional musicians, composers, conductors, and music teachers of tomorrow."

What's involved in the specialist music education we provide at St Mary's Music School? This Giving Tuesday, find out more from the School's Acting Chief Executive, John Reid.

"Hello there, Iโ€™m John Reid and Iโ€™m the Chief Executive Officer of St Maryโ€™s Music School. We provide a world-class musical education for students aged between nine and nineteen. We are a relatively small School, with a very nurturing atmosphere, and as our class sizes tend to be on the small side, this does help greatly in academic attainment. Some of our Students are choristers, and some are instrumentalists, and all have the opportunity to not only develop their individual talents, but also to play in a variety of ensembles and orchestras. St Maryโ€™s is a very special place, located here in the heart of Edinburgh, and dedicated to the nurturing of our talented students."

This Giving Tuesday the School's Development Manager, Caroline Libberton, would like to thank and celebrate the School's wonderful community of Friends, donors and supporters:

"This Giving Tuesday, we wanted to celebrate and thank our wonderful community of donors. Whether youโ€™re a Friend of the School, or a donor. Whether youโ€™re a music lover who comes along to our concerts to hear our young musicians perform. Whether youโ€™re a local business that perhaps sponsors one of our concerts or advertises in our concert programmes. Perhaps youโ€™re a trust or foundation thatโ€™s given us a grant towards an area of the work that we do, we are hugely grateful to all of you for your support. It is thanks to that support that we are able to offer such a remarkable range of musical opportunities to our young students. It is thanks to you that we can continue to attract the very best music teachers, in fact the very best teachers across all our academic subjects too. And itโ€™s thanks to you for a million other things, including keeping our fleet of over thirty pianos, tuned as theyโ€™re used on a daily basis by our students. We really are enormously grateful for your support, and for helping make St Maryโ€™s Music School the unique and remarkable place that it is."

At St. Mary's Music School, our mission to nurture talented young musicians is only made possible through the generosity of the Schoolโ€™s community of parents, Friends, donors, corporate partners, Trusts and Foundations and the support of the Scottish Governmentโ€™s Aided Places Scheme. Each contribution, whether large or small, plays a crucial role in helping us continue to provide a world-class music and academic education to our pupils.

Charitable Trusts and Foundations have a rich history of supporting St Mary's Music School, particularly in pivotal areas such as our Instrument Fund and the provision of Bursaries. Whether through single donations for specific projects or multi-year funding, each grant plays an invaluable part in helping us to nurture the next generation of professional musicians.

Huge thanks to all of the Schoolโ€™s supporters and funders for your generosity.

As Anti-Bullying Week 2023 comes to a close, our Primary class has dedicated their efforts to craft a meaningful display centred around the theme, 'Listen Up!'. Reflecting on this week, here are some key takeaways:

๐ŸŒŸ โ€˜My feelings are importantโ€™
๐ŸŒŸ โ€˜Adults should listen and keep us SAFEโ€™
๐ŸŒŸ โ€˜We have the right to feel safeโ€™
๐ŸŒŸ โ€˜Adults should take Bullying SERIOUSLYโ€™
๐ŸŒŸ โ€˜We look after each otherโ€™

At St Maryโ€™s Music School, we practice what we've learnedโ€”everyone's feelings are valued, adults are attentive guardians ensuring our safety, and the right to feel secure is a shared commitment. Bullying is tackled head-on, with adults treating it seriously. But it doesn't stop thereโ€”our mantra is simple: we look out for each other. It's this collective spirit that forms the basis of a bully-free environment. Together, we stand strong against bullying, creating a space where kindness reigns, and every voice is heard. ๐ŸŒˆ

Yesterday, the Primary class embarked on an interesting rainy field trip to the The Scottish Parliament! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Exploring the intricacies of the building, they were especially excited to see the Debating Chamber. From learning about the workings of the Scottish Parliament to admiring the architecture, the pupils absorbed it all- this was evident from the impressive scores achieved in the fun quiz at the end of the visit! A special shoutout to Susan for the fantastic tour and Miles Briggs MSP for taking the time to answer our questions!

The adventure continued with a scenic route back to school, walking up the Royal Mile and passing by the UK Government and Edinburgh Council offices, learning more about how our country and city are governed.

It was an eye-opening day, filled with laughter, learning, and a bit of tiredness as we finally made it back to the School!๐ŸŒŸ

Kerstin Holm, Biology and Eco-Schools Co-ordinator! ๐ŸŒŸ

Hailing from the Netherlands, Kerstin's journey to Edinburgh has been nothing short of an adventure. She's lived in various corners of the globe, gathering experiences that are as diverse as they are fascinating. ๐ŸŒŽ

From her early days studying Zoology to a stint as a dog groomer, guide dog trainer, and more, Kerstin's path led her to become our Biology teacher and the guiding force behind St Mary's Music School's EcoCommittee. ๐Ÿงซ๐Ÿถ

When Ms. Holm is in action, it's anything but ordinary. Whether it's peering through microscopes, delving into botany projects, or embarking on expeditions along the Water of Leith to explore biodiversity, she infuses her teaching days with a vibrant touch of curiosity and discovery. There's never a dull moment when Ms. Holm is at the helm of our Biology classes! ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐ŸŒฑ

Young people across Scotland (age10 - 18) are invited to compose a 3-minute fanfare for tenor horn, baritone horn, euphonium, trombone, bass trombone, and tuba.

The new fanfare should celebrate, or bring to attention some aspect of the composerโ€™s local environment โ€“ a landmark, person or group that holds significance.
