A little full circle moment 💛

Yesterday I was so excited to meet this amazing human! I got in touch with Gemma Coupar Tutoring when Merry Learners was just an idea.

Finding out I had no job to return to after maternity leave was pretty scary, and suddenly I found myself having to figure out what came next.

I knew I wanted to create something different, a space where children could feel supported, build confidence and enjoy learning.

But I had absolutely no idea where to start, all I knew was the school system! 😅

So I reached out to Gemma and asked if I could pick her brain💛 We chatted, she shared her experience about leaving teaching and setting up on her own. I was so lucky, she was so encouraging and gave me loads of advice and confidence that maybe this idea could actually become something!

Fast forward and yesterday we finally got to meet in real life at a Tutors Alliance Scotland where we are now both tutor reps 😍

One of the biggest things I've learned since starting Merry Learners is that you never stop learning yourself.

Whether that's learning from other tutors, listening to families, reflecting on sessions, or adapting based on the children in front of me. Even though I’m no longer in a classroom, I don’t think I’ll ever stop being a teacher who wants to learn, reflect and improve 😄

Lots of exciting planning happening behind the scenes at Merry Learners just now as I think ahead to August, but the goal will always stay exactly the same…

Helping children grow in confidence, curiosity and capability!

About 18 months ago, I got a message from someone asking for some advice on how to set up a tutoring business. I felt completely unqualified to answer as I’d only been doing it myself for 6 months, but I agreed to speak to her.

We had the most lovely chat and talked for ages and I think I was able to give her a few words of encouragement as she set up her business not long afterwards.

Fast forward 18 months and we have stayed in touch regularly online. I have absolutely loved watching her business Merry Learners grow and be really successful.

We are now both reps for Tutors Alliance Scotland and had the chance to meet in person today for the first time at a networking event…it was so lovely to actually meet her in real life!

I’m so proud of you Cat CW and can’t wait to see what’s next for you and your fantastic business!! 👏🏻👏🏻⭐️

A random act of kindness and a big thank you! 🙏🏻

I took my Homework Club kids down to the prom this afternoon for a photography session…I clearly hadn’t trusted the weather forecast and was optimistic that it would just be a small shower at worst.

As the hail clouds moved steadily towards us, a guy came over and asked if the kids would all like an ice cream from Crumbs. I politely declined, but the kids were all very excited at the thought. He returned a few minutes later with a receipt and told them to go and choose what they wanted 🍦

We had just got the last one when the hail came and we hastily took shelter in the Shrimp Wreck hut. The sun then came out as they finished them and we were able to enjoy the rest of our session.

Thank you so much to the kind man - it was so unexpected ☺️ I’ve suggested to the kids that they might like to pay it forward with a random act of kindness this week ☺️ You’ve restored my faith in humanity with all the bad stuff going on in the world right now 😢
