2024 is the Year of the Dragon! Ryūjin, sometimes considered the same deity as Watatsumi or Ōwatatsumi no kami, is the draconic lord of the sea in Japan. He brings forth rain and storms, and is an important kami for Japan, that gets a lot of its food from the sea. It is said that he lives in Ryūgū-jō, the 'dragon palace castle', which exists deep in the ocean, and he controls the tides with magic jewels.

Cinema Paradiso New Year Scene 31/12/2023

New Year's Eve in Italy.

Out with the old, in with the new.

This concept is taken quite literally in Naples and across Southern Italy – where locals celebrate the arrival of midnight by tossing old dishes (cocci) and furniture out the window and onto the street.

Here’s a little clip from Cinema Paradiso, based in Sicily, which shows this perfectly.

Did you know that in Germany pigs are associated with good luck?

A New Year’s tradition is the gifting of marzipan pigs for good luck.

Here’s hoping you get a pig on Hogmanay.

Lucky pigs and protective boars: The medieval origins of the Glücksschwein Why are pigs associated with good luck? Traces of 'lucky pigs' are found in late medieval board and card games, while the use of boar effigies as talismans is attested as far back as the early Middle Ages.

Eating twelve grapes. You have to eat them one by one, in time with the striking of the clock at midnight on 31 December. If you manage to eat all the grapes in time you are in for a year of prosperity and good luck.

Top tip. Buy a can of small grapes and you may just manage to eat them all.

Little things which we often forget

Word of the week thanks to German Embassy London.

As we are based in Edinburgh, wondering if the German Consulate General Edinburgh has any interesting words for us.

This is more a phrase of the week but we like it.

It’s time….it will help your French.
