Materials & Environmental Sciences 🔎 Dr Humphrey Yiu teaches the fundamentals of materials sciences and he works on various research studies about the removal of organic contaminants, detection of toxins, and monitoring of food and water qualities. Recent development of devices fitted with molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been found to be particularly attractive owing to their cost, stability, high selectivity, and mobility. MIPs can also be used to extract these organic pollutants at low concentrations. The development of magnetic MIPs facilitates the separation & recovery of absorbents by using an external magnetic field after the target molecules have been bound. Fluid Mechanics & multi-phase flows for Chemical Engineers: Dr Ozel's research group explore several topics including the multi-scale modelling of fluid particle flows, rheology of granular materials and biological flows. The aim is to enable next generation flow systems which can offer real world solutions to global challenges ranging from the innovation in energy & process engineering to the deployment of carbon capture technologies.
