It’s the last day of our fire engineering 50th anniversary celebrations! 🔥 Thanks for joining us this week as we have shown how air, fuel and heat interact in different ways and talked about how impacts so much of our lives.
For this last experiment, we have a fuel-air co-flow burner. Watch what happens to the shape of the flame when the airflow is changed in this tube experiment.
We’re about to light up your curiosity with a demo of a scaled-down model of one of the very first types of rocket engines! 🔥🚀 👨🚀
Setup: a tube of plastic (polymethyl methacrylate).
Action: oxygen flowing through the middle of the tube sets the stage for combustion.
Ignition: watch as we light it from the bottom and see the flame shoot out!
Control: our design keeps everything contained, making sure we safely get to see the action without lift off.
Stay tuned for more one more experiment tomorrow as part of our fire engineering 50th anniversary celebrations.

Fire tornado demo! 🌪️🔥
Setup: we start with a simple dish and some flammable liquid.
Ignition: with a flame and a spin, initially, not much happens.
Twist: introducing a mesh around our setup changes the game! 🔥
Transformation: a regular spin suddenly turns into a fire tornado!
Key: it’s all about the airflow creating that spectacular spiral of flames.
Stay tuned for more experiments over the next two days as part of our fire 50th anniversary celebrations.
Ever wondered how fire behaves under different conditions? Get ready for a fascinating look at fire dynamics! Join us for our 50th anniversary of fire as we demonstrate experiments showing the interaction between fuel, heat, and air. 🌪️🔥 From 9-11 Oct 2024 edin.ac/3NbZdtP
We're celebrating 50 years of at the University of Edinburgh! 🔥🎉 Over the decades, our commitment has grown from the foundational principles set by James Braidwood in the 1800s to a comprehensive suite of courses shaping tomorrow’s fire safety leaders.
Fire engineers design our infrastructure to be resilient against fires, including wildland fires which pose an increasing threat globally.
With two MScs and an undergraduate programme, we're proud of our history and excited about our future. Here's to many more years of innovation!
