🎬 Stray Dog /野良犬 (Dir. Kurosawa Akira, 1949)
Starring Mifune Toshiro and Shimura Takashi as two mismatched cops hunting a
violent criminal across Tokyo during a summer heatwave, this film is arguably
Kurosawa’s earliest masterpiece. The 16 movies Kurosawa made with Mifune
between 1948-1965 presents one of the most striking actor-director bodies of work in cinema, and Stray Dog finds both artists operating at their peak intensities.

🎬 River /リバー、流れないでよ (Dir. Yamaguchi Junta, 2023)
Junta Yamaguchi is one of Japan’s most exciting new directors, and the time-travel
comedy River is proof of his talents. The film focuses on the workers and guests of
an old ryokan in Kibune, Kyoto, who find themselves trapped in a time loop that
resets every two minutes: chaos, confusion, and farce ensues. One of the funniest
and warmest comedies to come out of the country in recent years, River also
displays the rural beauty of Kyoto’s northern mountains.

Films can be watched individually, i.e only first or only second film

These spectacular photos were taken from Portobello (Beach and Streets) in Edinburgh this week by one of colleagues. We were spoiled for choice where to see the Northern Lights this week: Portobello, Calton Hill, Holyrood Park, Blackford Hill - to name but a few.

Edinburgh remains a fantastically diverse and fun city to study and live in.
