To mark St Andrew's Day, our P6s enjoyed a 'Tartan Talk' from the brilliant Deirdre Kinloch Anderson OBE 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Deirdre spoke about the interesting history of Kinloch Anderson and what it takes to make a good quality kilt! πŸ‘ Pupils couldn't believe how heavy some of the fabrics were and even got to see the Balmoral Tartan - a fabric reserved for the reigning monarch and their piper ⭐

At the weekend the inaugural 'Caritas Banner' was held in our Music School 🎼 The competition was a Piobaireachd contest for pipers aged 18 & under, giving young players a platform to perform the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe whilst pitching themselves against some of the very best young pipers in the UK 🎢 It was split into three categories and attracted 52 pipers from across the country ⭐ The triumphant winner on the day was our very own Principal’s Piper, Lyle (S4) who is pictured with his brace of prizes including the Caritas Banner πŸ‘ GWC pupils saw further success with Gregor (S3), Eva (S3) and William (S3) picking up prizes in the 14 & under events - a great result and we look forward to the competition next year! πŸ…

Our P7s had a brilliant time in London soaking up the sights and visiting the Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, the London Eye and of course, the famous Globe Theatre where they participated in some fun drama workshops! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ They managed to do a lot in the short time they were there and were super ambassadors for the school as they wandered round the Big Smoke! πŸ‘

Our P4s have been learning all about Diwali - the Hindu festival of light πŸ›• Two of our classes listened to the story of Diwali as told by our guest speakers, Soniya Rane and Suni Waddell before getting creative and making candle holders - one class decorated pre-made holders while the others were making their own out of clay πŸ•―οΈ

On Friday, 10 pupils participated in the North Berwick MUN Conference 🌐 They represented Canada and Israel in committees such as Media, Environment, Health, Human Rights and Politics and made fantastic impressions - from researching to writing resolutions, they worked collaboratively with each other and with other pupils from various schools around Scotland πŸ‘

The culmination of their hard work was the Canadian delegation being named Best Delegation for the Conference πŸ… This was an incredible achievement as they were up against some very experienced (and much older!) MUN delegates ⭐ Congratulations to all our pupils πŸ‘

Our skiers have enjoyed some brilliant success at the Dual Slalom skiing finals at Hillend 🎿 The P1-4 Team came 4th in their race with 7 successful runs, winning 4 out of 7 races πŸ‘ The S1-3 Team won Gold and were overall champions (in the S1-S3 category) with a tight final against Boroughmuir πŸ‘ Lastly, the Open (Senior) team were unlucky and lost to Robert Gordon's College in the final, bagging their silver medals πŸ‘ Great work from our skiing teams ⛷️

We were thrilled to invite Tommy & Davy Zwy (Class of 2005) back to Watson's this week.
As our Junior Duke Awards Ambassadors, they spoke about their lives since leaving school, the joy of learning new skills, the challenges they have faced, their resilience and also the importance of caring for others.
We were all very impressed to learn that they had raised over Β£150k for Motor Neurone Disease Charities πŸ‘ An incredible inspiration.
We look forward to welcoming them back again in June to congratulate the pupils on their Junior Duke achievementsπŸ…

It was great to see Tommy and Davy Zyw (Class of 2005) yesterday, who are our new Junior Duke ambassadors for 2023/24. They enjoyed a brief visit to their old classroom before inspiring our Junior School pupils at assembly with their presentation on perseverance, motivation and achievement.

Our Mock Court teams performed with great distinction last night at the Court of Session in Edinburgh πŸ‘¨β€βš–οΈ They acted as lawyers & witnesses during their mock trials in front of real sheriffs and judges πŸ‘©β€βš–οΈ This was the culmination of 2 months of external tutorials where they learned how to prepare legal documents and conduct themselves in court πŸ‘ Great work!

Prior to our pupils heading to Malawi, Alison Ashford (GWLC Class of 1969) & other Former Pupils heard about pupils' plans to take a number of cosy knits for newborn babies to East Africa ❀️ The ladies immediately set to work with their knitting needles and the rest, as they say, is history 🧢

"We heard that current pupils were taking these little outfits to Malawi when we were stitching the GWLC150 Commemorative Tapestry. It involved another craft, knitting, that many of us also enjoyed doing so we were delighted to help.” πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ό

Our Advanced Higher Art & Design pupils recently participated in an Encaustic Workshop πŸ–ŒοΈ Encaustic is an ancient painting method in which wax and pigment are fused onto a surface with heat to create fantastic craftsmanship πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ¨ We loved the textures and colours in each painting πŸ‘
