What unhelpful beliefs are loud in your head? 💬

These are the beliefs are louder than they need to be - although not necessarily objectively wrong.

Let's take two English speakers:

1️⃣ This speaker's unhelpful belief is "Fluency means speaking quickly."
2️⃣ This speaker's unhelpful belief is "Fluency means speaking correctly."

For both of them, these beliefs are really loud and they're impacting they're behaviour and they're confidence:

1️⃣ This speaker struggles to be understood - they speak really fast, meaning they sometimes stumble over pronunciations or throw words together in a random order, and people often ask them to repeat themselves. They've spent time trying to work on accuracy but - in the moment of speaking - all that goes out of the window. They feel terrible about their English because it's as if they're making no progress at all. They listen back to recordings of meetings they participate in and they cringe at the mispronunciations and errors. Over time, this really has an impact on their confidence and they've stopped speaking up as much and started to believe that working in an English-speaking environment isn't possible in the long-term.

2️⃣ This speaker struggles to know how to participate in conversations. They want time to think about what they want to say, and to construct it as best they can. But before they've had time to gather their thoughts, the conversation has moved on. When they do speak, they feel the pressure of eyes on them and feel as if they're taking up too much time but they can't seem to relax or speed up, even though they're capable of doing so. They've found themselves frustrated at work because people who are louder and more dominant are having their opinions listened to, even though their ideas are - frankly - not great. They feel like they have no impact on their job, their team or their career.

For each of these imaginary people, their unhelpful belief isn't wrong (the other person would benefit from taking it on board!) - but it's outsized, it's having too much of an influence on their lives.

Will I see you there, English teachers?

What I do 💅

What do you need more?

What got you here won’t get you there.

The teaching you’re used to is all well and good at lower levels.

But if you’re still thinking that “just one more course” is what’s missing at Advanced level…I have some bad news for you!

You’ve already got enough language - no, no, no, I know it’s not ✨perfect✨ but it’s sufficient. More than sufficient!

So if you’re still feeling like your English is holding you back, sorry, but you’re actually looking in the wrong place for your confidence!

Coaching with me doesn’t do ANYTHING for your language. You WILL NOT IMPROVE in my sessions.

…and yet…

Things will change.

Life will get easier…lighter…that constant hum of anxiety and negativity will become quieter.

And those things you are scared of - speaking up in meetings, starting conversations in the school playground, going for that promotion - they’ll suddenly seem…fine.

And you’ll wonder what had you so worried in the first place!

DM me or send me an email to set up a free 20-minute consultation to see if coaching with me is what you’re looking for 💖

🎉 It’s time to break free.

For too long, we’ve been told that confidence in English comes from being perfect:
✔️ No mistakes
✔️ Native-like fluency
✔️ Endless vocabulary

But perfection is a myth, and chasing it only holds you back.

That’s why I created The Confidence Uprising: a free guide to help you rewrite the rules, trust your voice, and start showing up in English in a way that feels authentic to YOU.

[latest blog post] How to Stay Realistic in Your Language Learning Journey

Photos from Rhiannon ELT's post 08/01/2025

✨ Confidence isn’t about perfect English—it’s about living the moments that matter. ✨

On her last holiday to London, G. froze in an ice cream shop. Too many choices. A queue behind her. Unexpected phrases from the server. She panicked, just about managed to order, but spent the rest of the day upset.

This New Year, things were different.

We spent our coaching sessions preparing for moments like these: breaking them down, tackling her nerves, and building real confidence. The result? G. spent New Year’s Eve in a London ice cream shop, relaxed, and enjoying her favourite mandarine ice cream.

It wasn’t just about ordering ice cream—it was about reclaiming her joy and confidence. 🧡

[Latest Blog] “As 2024 comes to a close, there’s something about this time of year that feels both reflective and full of possibility. It’s a season to look back on what we’ve achieved, the challenges we’ve faced, and the lessons we’ve learned. It’s also a time to look forward, thinking about the opportunities and changes we want to embrace in the new year.”

🤫 Learning how to lower the volume on your inner critic is absolutely essential to feeling comfortable speaking a second language.

What do you think?

My latest blog post is about exactly this - practical techniques for quieting the negative voice in your head that tells you you’re not good enough.

Or something else?

My latest blog post is on the difference between healthy and unhealthy learning and why I so rarely recommend my clients take on more English study.
