The European Commission has told researchers to document their AI use. The AIR framework can be used to do it.
The EU's updated guidelines on AI in research include a clear instruction for researchers: document your AI use transparently, in the methods section, with enough detail to show how it shaped the research process.
It’s the right call. It’s also easier said than done.
What counts as substantial AI use? How do you describe generative AI involvement in data analysis differently from writing? How do you communicate the level of human oversight that was maintained?
Without a shared vocabulary, transparency statements tend to collapse into a single vague sentence.
The AIR Framework maps the research process across seven stages and five levels of AI involvement, with risk profiles and verification guidance at each point. It gives researchers a structured way to produce the kind of disclosure the EU guidelines are asking for.
I've written a post about how AIR relates to recommendation 2 of the new ERA living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research (link in comments). The AIR Framework itself is free to download from Figshare and published under CC BY 4.0.
The infographic image was created using Gemini Nano Banana 2, then adapted in Photoshop. It's public domain so anyone can reuse it. The QR code leads to the ERA guidelines.

The EU’s new AI guidelines tell researchers to document their AI use transparently.
Most don’t have a structured way to do it. The AIR Framework does ✅

During our training sessions, several participants have asked about using AI generated images for enhancing a LinkedIn profile headshot. Since it's a question we are asked frequently, here are some thoughts:
1. They're cheaper than a real professional photographer 💷
Yes, AI generated images can be cheaper than a professional headshot from a photographer (our 20 headshots cost approximately £20).
2. Polishing your photo is becoming more popular 📣
Apparently, more than 12% of LinkedIn users are experimenting with AI profile photos. Can you spot the AI ones vs the real ones?
3. Is it really you though? 🔆
AI can struggle with capturing expressions or natural aspects, so some headshots may look a bit robotic or inaccurate (ours did). We only tried it once, but we were given the option to feedback and possibly refine the AI images so the results could be better after a few iterations.

Brilliant couple of days at the UKCGE conference on postgraduate education and research in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park chatting with folks from a range of institutions, discussing challenges & hearing about fascinating projects. Now heading home with lots to think about!
I’m including some photos from the event - they include some sports shots that relate to the fabulous venue! (I just had to try the BMX track!)
Huge thanks to UKCGE Angus Burns and the team for organising!
