Friends of Lorne Primary School
Hi, Could you share info please about a get together next Tuesday at 7pm to chat about Dalmeny Street Park. Thanks!
We facilitate a project at Pilmeny Youth Centre named P2HS (Primary to High School) for P7s who are transitioning to high school next summer. Our current group is made up of S1s from Leith academy, who were our P7s before the summer.
The sessions are on Fridays from 1.15pm to 2.45pm and are mostly social with football, basketball, music & TV room and interaction with staff members, William and Lauren.
The occasional interactive chats are informally intended to address any transition fears, issues and concerns P7s may have when making the move to high school. In essence, P2HS aims to alleviate these with S1s giving feedback, and indeed, early next year we’d be inviting our S3/S4 service users to attend Q & A sessions.
Entry is a token 50p and free Greggs Goodies are on offer. Check our flyer for details and give us a call to reserve a place.....
Hi Lorne parents,
Please feel free to delete if this isn’t appropriate! I’m hoping to spread the word about a free family weekend taking place at Dynamic Earth on the 26 – 27 October. The Festival of Physics is a celebration of science featuring hands-on workshops, super science shows, music, theatre, dome shows and much more. I’m putting it on in association with the Institute of Physics to help everyone engage with the joy and wonder of curiosity – we had a great first year in 2017 and are hoping to welcome even more folk this time around.
Highlights for primary-age kids include the Physics Wizardry Potions Class, science shows from Neil Monteiro and Simon Watt, the Ultraviolet Drawing Room, making your own cyanotypes, making juggling balls, playing unique computer game challenges and joining the DIY Scratch Orchestra. For younger children there’s a cosy tent with stories, songs and activities, and for teens there’s shows all about the physics of time and the fascinating science of colour, workshops on chocolate and an opportunity to explore cutting-edge science of gravitational waves.
There’s plenty for adults on the Friday and Saturday evenings too, with quizzes, astronomy, films and talks from world-class scientists – check out the full programme at
www.festivalofphysics.org.
Any questions please feel free to get in touch on
[email protected] and hope to see some of you there!
Kind regards,
Siân
These rock stars raised £54.80 for the Lorne Primary P7 trip Lagganlia at today's Big Beach Busk at Portobello. Thanks everyone who stopped by to encourage them on and donate.
Big beach busk - well done girls 🎤🎸🎻
Afternoon everyone, hope you all had a great Summer!
This year Active Schools have added swimming lessons to the programme which will be available to all local children, running from the pool at Leith Academy! We're really excited to get this up and running!
We will be running different classes for different competencies of swimmers and in order to make sure your child is placed in the correct class we will be holding assessments next week free of charge. Please follow the link below to book in to an assessment class (Wed or Thurs next week) - after the assessment you will be able to book in to the appropriate classes for the term ahead which will run on Thursdays and Fridays after school. For info - classes will be 40 mins long, priced at £2 per lesson and will run for 12 weeks this term, following the non-aquatic Active Schools term dates.
Bookings for all other Active Schools clubs will be open from Monday next week - children will bring home a letter about these clubs as usual.
Thanks very much
Lee
Hi all,
Please feel free to delete if this isn't relevant - I'm spreading the word about a free family science festival coming up that I've organised with the Institute of Physics.
The Festival of Physics is taking place on Sat 4 and Sun 5 Nov at George Watson's Senior School (not affiliated with the school, we just needed a hall big enough!) and runs from 10am - 10pm on the Sat and 10pm - 5pm on Sunday.
There are hands-on workshops, fun science shows, storytelling for under 5s, and, of course, plenty of experiments. There's also events for teens and grown-ups including interactive events on the physics of chocolate and lectures from researchers involved in the detection of gravitational waves in space and the discovery of the Higgs boson.
All events are totally free, and no booking required - just turn up.
The programme for the festival lives here:

Hope to see some of your there!
Was a pupil 1953 to 1955 living in Lorne Square. Had to walk all the way round to Jamieson Place to get into school as the entrance on Lorne Street was for girls only.
