The Scottish Universities' International Summer School (SUISS) was founded as a non-profit organisation by Professor David Daiches in 1947 in the spirit of the Edinburgh International Festival. The School brings together students and academics who, irrespective of their national, religious, or cultural difference, share a love of literature. Each summer we offer three courses in Text and Context:

No visit to the SUISS Modernism and Creative Writing course would be complete without an exclusive tour of Mansfield Traquair, known as 'Edinburgh's Sistine Chapel,' and the gorgeous technicolour murals of Phoebe Anna Traquair.
One of the absolute highlights of the SUISS Creative Writing and Contemporary Literature courses is the ceilidh - a traditional (and lively) gathering featuring music and dance. Spotlight On: Theatre & Performance (4th - 16th August)
This two-week course provides a challenging, dynamic and diverse introduction to contemporary British and Irish theatre with a global impact. The course takes place in Edinburgh, giving students the chance to study theatre and performance in Scotland’s beautiful capital city, while the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe take place.
We love seeing familiar faces at SUISS! Here's our very own .tym (SUISS Co-Director 2012-2013) with her Oakwood University student, Gabriella Belcher. Gabby attended the SUISS Contemporary Theatre & Performance course last year. We can't wait to welcome them both back to Scotland in the near future (sooner rather than later, please :))
Spotlight On: Creative Writing (7th July - 2nd August 2025)
This course offers developing writers a supportive environment in which to further their writing skills in fiction, poetry, and drama. Students have a unique opportunity to develop their own critical analysis by attending Modernism and Contemporary Literature lectures, as well as author-led Masterclasses and exclusive author readings.
SUISS tutors, who are published writers and experienced teachers, lead the students in group seminars and tailored mentoring sessions.
Spotlight On: The Text & Context Programme
Our Modernism, Contemporary Literature and Scottish Literature courses (Text & Context) provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach, examining literature from Britain and Ireland in the context of the key societal and cultural developments during the 20th/21stC.
Classes are complimented by exclusive author readings, private tours of historical/ cultural sites around Edinburgh, and excursions to the city's famous indie book and coffee shops

The SUISS Gavin Wallace Translation Fellowship: SUISS will offer two fully-funded places on the Contemporary and Scottish Literature courses (4-weeks) to two professional commercial translators with an interest in contemporary Scottish writing.
This fellowship will foster collaboration between translators with the aim of promoting Scottish Literature, in particular, to an international audience. Please note that these fellowships are available for our residential course only and covers the course and standard accommodation fee. Details on the SUISS website.
The Middle Eastern Scholarship: We are delighted to announce that we are offering a residential scholarship to a student from the Middle East during the Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS).
The scholarship is intended to support a gifted literature student who would not otherwise be able to attend the School for financial reasons, and will be awarded on the basis of academic merit as well as financial need. The scholarship will cover the course and accommodation fee for either Text & Context, Creative Writing or Theatre & Performance. Details available on the SUISS website
The Edwin Morgan Scholarship, supported by the Edwin Morgan Trust, through The Second Life Awards and by our affiliated universities, offers full-funding of the SUISS Scottish Literature course for early-career academics, from both the UK and abroad, who either run courses in Scottish Literature, or who have permission from their departments to set up such a course, or doctoral candidates in the late stages of a PhD on an aspect of Scottish Literature. SUISS commemorates the life and vision of our founder by offering a special scholarship in his name. This scholarship will cover the costs of all tuition, accommodation, most meals, a social and cultural programme and full use of the facilities of Edinburgh University’s library. The School brings together students and academics who, irrespective of their national, religious, or cultural difference, share a love of literature.
Each summer, we run courses in British and Irish literature and culture from 1900 to the present, Creative Writing and Theatre & Performance courses.
We welcome undergraduates, postgraduates, teachers and lecturers from all over the world: in 2012, our students came from 33 different countries.
The School presents a wonderful opportunity to visit Scotland and combines excellent educational facilities with the incomparable surroundings of Scotland's capital city.
SUISS runs for a total of six weeks. Students may choose to come for the full programme, or attend either the first, the second, or the third two-week term, or a combination of the modules for a continuous programme of study throughout the six weeks.
