'German Architectural Modernism, Spatial Perpetration and the Concentration Camp'

Jessica Cretney, De Montfort University (Leicester)

This talk will explore tangible and theoretical connections between German architectural modernism and the Third Reich. These connections, and how the built environment functioned as a means of inflicting harm, will be illustrated through case studies of Dachau concentration camp and the architect Ernst Neufert. It will question how intention manifests in design, the role of architects and the significance of standardisation in replicating patterns of social inclusion and exclusion.

The talk will be followed by refreshments.

Exciting news! We are hosting a book launch for "States of Ignorance: Governing Irregular Migrants in Western Europe" (eds. Christina Boswell & Emile Chabal). Using theories of state ignorance - and drawing on archival material and qualitative data - this interdisciplinary book explores how states see (or don't see) irregular migration, and how this has changed since the 1960s.

The launch will take place on Monday 29 January, 17:00-19:00 in the Meadows Lecture Theatre. A short presentation of the book will be followed by responses from three discussants, drawn from different fields: Abdellali Hajjat (Université libre de Bruxelles), Cetta Mainwaring (Edinburgh) & Enda Delaney (Edinburgh). Book launch - 'States of Ignorance: Governing Irregular Migrants in Western Europe' 'States of Ignorance' explores an aspect of contemporary society that most states choose to keep obscure: the presence and governance of irregular migrants. Join us for the launch of this brand new book

The welcome event stimulated a wide range of conversation about both 'Modern' & 'Contemporary' history terms. Ideas about informal hubs for research conversation were as wide as possible.

The CSMCH are hosting another writing retreat! We are lucky to be joined by Dr Kerry-Joe Reilly, from the UCL Writing Lab, who will lead the event and provide lots of tips and tricks to maximise our writing!

The day will be split into four 1 hour writing sessions with lots of opportunities to talk to other doctoral researchers throughout the day. As tea, coffee and lunch will be provided please only book yourself onto the event if you can commit to the full day. Afterwards, we'll be hosting a drinks reception so come along and get writing!

CSMCH is co-sponsoring a workshop on 23 June entitled "Writing and publishing contemporary history". It's in two parts: in the morning, a lecture by Martin Conway (Oxford) on "Is there a history of the present in Europe?" and, in the afternoon, a workshop targeted at ECRs and PhDs on publishing, which includes a roundtable and the opportunity to get feedback from real-life journal editors from Contemporary European History on an abstract or first 1000 words of an article draft.
