Signals and Communications 3, Course ELEE09017, School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh. http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/16-17/dpt/cxelee09017.htm

This course aims builds on Signals and Communication Systems 2 (SCEE08007) to introduce students to the fundamentals of discrete-time signal processing and communications. In the first half, the course considers discrete-time analysis techniques, gaining insights in both time-domain and frequency domain. Infinite duration signals are assumed. The second half course then considers baseband communications and information theory.

USA: Using the CEDAR DNS 2 dialogue noise suppressor on location for live broadcast, documentaries, news and interviews.

We've been asked many times - by live broadcasters, documentary film makers, news reporters and other interviewers - to explain how they can use the DNS 2 dialogue noise suppressor on location. There are many answers to this, but we felt that we could explain it best using a short video to show one in use in real situations such as alongside a highway or in an industrial area. So, on the basis that a picture (or in this case, a moving picture) is worth a thousand words, we made one.

As you will see, the DNS 2 is so small and light that it will drop into a recorder bag. And, with a 12V input, analogue and digital I/O, and high quality mic pre-amps, it's all that you might need for optimum live broadcasting or recording. Whether you're on location, on a noisy soundstage, or even reporting from a conflict zone, we think that you'll be stunned by the simplicity of the DNS 2 and the results that you'll obtain from it.

Dear Class,

A slightly updated version of the datasheet for this course has been added to LEARN. This data sheet will be available to you in the Examination.

The changes to the datasheet are:

1. Page 3, Probability: Added a conditional probability relationship at the end of this section (Bayes's theorem).

2. Page 4, Detection: Added the Hamming bound at the end of this section.

3. Page 4, Quantisation and PCM: A new section involving signal to quantisation noise for audio and speech.

There is a more direct link to the datasheet using the left hand panel in LEARN, or it is in the Resource folder.

Please contact either myself or Dr Sotirios Tsaftaris if you have any questions regarding this.

Best wishes

James

I have uploaded the tutorial solutions to Handout 1 ("Discrete-Time Signals and Systems"), along with a copy of Handout 2 ("The Z-transform and its application to the analysis of LTI systems"). Apologies about the delay with posting Handout 2 to LEARN (it was always uploaded, just forgot to make it available!).
