Festive holiday period | News | The University of Edinburgh The University will be closed during the winter break from 5pm on Tuesday 23 December 2025 and will reopen at 9am on Monday 5 January 2026.

Severe weather update: Some University services planned to reopen on Saturday 25 January A Met Office red weather warning remains in place for Edinburgh until 5pm today, Friday 24 January, with wind alerts until midnight.

Severe weather warning: University closure on Friday 24 January A weather warning has been issued for Scotland ahead of Storm Éowyn. This includes a rare red alert for Scotland's central belt, including Edinburgh, from 10am - 5pm on Friday 24 January.

As our social channels go quiet for the holiday season, we want to wish everyone a joyful and restful festive break!

Reminder: The School and University will be closed across the 2024 festive period from 5pm on Monday 23 December 2024 and reopening at 9am on Friday 3 January 2025. Our School social media accounts will be live again from Monday 6th January.

Although many of our offices and buildings will be closed, core University services will operate throughout the holiday period.

The Davis Expedition Fund seeks to create opportunities for students and early career researchers to carry out field research.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must be individuals or groups of any nationality who are studying the biological sciences at the University of Edinburgh.

• Current or past postgraduate Students at the School of Biological Sciences, The University of Edinburgh

The James Rennie Bequest is travel prize awarded to students who wish to travel to places outside the UK in connection with extracurricular studies in biology.

Who Can Apply?
Applicants must be individuals or groups who are studying within the College of Science and Engineering at Edinburgh University.
- undergraduate or postgraduate students
- studying for a degree in the biological sciences - including ecological sciences

Scope
The money must be used to support travel to a:
- work experience placement
- fieldwork
- conference at which you are presenting a paper or poster
