The Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art (EAFA) is committed to the continuance of traditional modes of teaching drawing and painting and creating the new masters of today. Through learning the time honoured methods of the nineteenth century academies, artists first master the language of drawing and painting, building a pathway to more truthful expression. Just as musicians must first learn their instru

The final week of term is here, and we’re excited to launch a new school-wide project that every student can be part of.

Together, we’ll be creating a large-scale master copy, bringing students from across the school together on one collaborative artwork. Junior students working on Bargue drawings will contribute to the construction and transfer stages, while senior students will take on the painting and bring the piece to life.

This is an exciting long-term project for our school and a fantastic opportunity to develop drawing and painting skills, learn from one another, and experience the process of creating a large-scale work as a team.

We can’t wait to see this piece come together and watch every student leave their mark on something truly special. 🎨✨

Our student Estelle has been developing a lovely collection of plein air oil paintings inspired by different locations around Edinburgh.

Each study captures a quiet moment of the city through careful observation, colour, and light.

Take a look through the paintings and let us know how many place you recognise:)

Neat corners when stretching a canvas can be tricky, right?
Our student Ronja .duczek shows a simple way to wrap them cleanly for a strong, even finish.

A small technique that helps to keep the canvas properly tensioned.

How do you handle the corners when stretching a canvas?

We often recommend to our students for their wide range of materials, papers and studio essentials, as well as their accessible website and reliable delivery.

A rather nice side effect is the number of excellent boxes that arrive at the studio.

As this little video shows, we always find a way to reuse them. Nothing goes to waste if it can be turned into something useful. ♻️🎨

We loved this video so much we had to share it on Reels too.

At our school, brushes and how you care for them are a big deal. We always encourage students to have their own. It is the most important tool an artist owns. You get used to them, they become an extension of your hand, and it just does not feel right using someone else’s.

We also know choosing brushes can feel overwhelming. So many shapes, so many brands, and that little voice asking if you picked the wrong one.

Very soon we will be sharing our go to oil painting starter brush pack, the ones we actually recommend at the school.

For now, share your most useful advice when buying brushes in the comments. I am sure it will help so many artists.

Filling up fast! Looking forward to this one for sure. We spend so much time focusing on learning the language of painting or the technical application. What kind of compositions can we accomplish with these skills and what stories does our inner artist have to tell? Should be interesting….and well it’s ……phenomenal painter and teacher!

This term has flown by. With only two weeks left before our well deserved Christmas break, take a look inside our studios and see the incredible progress our students are making. Some have already completed their projects and moved on to the next stage, while others are putting the final touches on their work.

If you are looking for a meaningful gift for someone who loves art or has always wanted to give it a try, our gift certificates are a wonderful way to inspire them. We offer certificates from £100 to £300 that can be redeemed on short courses, evening classes and daytime studies. See our previous post for details.
