3 Glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon… which one would you choose? 🍷

Same wine. Three different glasses. Three completely different experiences.

Glass 3 – Sauvignon Blanc Glass
The nose here felt tight and restrained, giving very little away. On the palate there was just a slight hint of fruit alongside noticeable tannins, but strangely almost no balancing acidity. The wine felt flat, closed and lacking expression.

Glass 2 – Oaked Chardonnay Glass
This was perhaps the most surprising. The nose felt dull and, quite frankly, rather unattractive — a few subdued aromatics, but everything seemed muted and heavy. Taste it, and there was a real whack of acidity and tannin, yet almost no fruit at all. The balance completely disappeared.

Glass 1 – Cabernet Sauvignon/Bordeaux Blend (Cabernet Merlot) Glass ✨
Now the wine finally showed its true character. The nose was rich, intense, complex and deeply inviting, bursting with blackcurrant, cassis and subtle spice. On tasting, everything came beautifully together — generous fruit, layered complexity, polished tannins and impressive length, with every element perfectly balanced and harmonious.

The difference? The glass.

Orange wine is one of the most misunderstood bottles on the shelf and honestly one of the most fascinating. Here's what's actually going on:

It starts with white grapes. But instead of separating the skins straight away like you would for a typical white, the juice is left in contact with the skins, exactly like red wine. That's where the colour, the texture and all that character come from.

🍑 The result? That beautiful golden, amber glow. A texture that's slightly grippy and a little untamed. Flavours of dried apricot, orange peel, warm spices and something just a bit wild underneath.

The most common reason wine disappoints you has nothing to do with the wine. 🍷

It's temperature. And almost everyone gets it wrong in both directions.

Here's what's actually happening in your glass:

🌡️ Your red is probably too warm
"Room temperature" in most homes is warmer than red wine wants to be. Heat pushes the alcohol forward, dulls the fruit and makes every sip feel heavier than it should. A few minutes in the fridge before you pour makes a remarkable difference.

🧊 **Your white is probably too cold**
Straight from the fridge, white wine is essentially closed. The aroma disappears, the acidity feels sharp and the whole thing tastes flat. Let it sit for ten minutes and watch it come alive. Same bottle. Completely different experience.

The quickest fix you'll ever learn:
Cup the bowl of the glass in your hand. Too cold against your palm? Give it a moment. Too warm? Three minutes in the fridge. That's genuinely all it takes.

Temperature shapes everything: the brightness of the acidity, the smoothness of the tannins, how open the aromas are. Most disappointing wine moments are actually just temperature moments.
