Invitation for students to take part in an International Study on Music and Emotional Wellbeing

Dear Parents,

I hope this finds you well. I am reaching out to you today to invite your child to participate in an
ongoing international study on Music and Emotional Wellbeing. I am a piano teacher based in
Edinburgh, and this study will form part of my PhD in Music at the University of Edinburgh,
supervised by Prof. Katie Overy and Dr Aja Murray.

Study Details:

- Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between musical experience and
emotional wellbeing during adolescence in two different cultural contexts: the UK and Hong Kong.

- Duration: The study involves an anonymous survey which will take about 30 minutes to complete.
The survey will then be repeated after 3 months and again after 6 months.

- Participant Criteria: Anyone between the ages of 12 and 14 can take part – no musical training is
necessary.

- Parental Consent: Prior to participating, parental or guardian consent will be required for all
participants.

- Incentives: As a token of appreciation, participants will have the chance to win a £50 Amazon

voucher, through a lucky draw, at the end of each survey – a possible total of £150.

- Participation Time: Participants are encouraged to complete the surveys in their own time. If your
child wishes to take part, please sign up at the study website.

If you think your child may be interested in taking part, and if they are 12-14 years of age, please do
share this invitation with them. I have attached a copy of the study flyer to this letter. If you decide
you are happy for your child to take part, please sign a copy of the Parent Consent Form here
(https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/scothk-music/study-info/ ). Your child may then proceed to fill in a Participant

Consent Form altogether with the survey.
All survey data will be collected entirely anonymously and treated with the utmost confidentiality.

Any personal information collected from the consent forms will be stored entirely separately from the
survey responses. All data will be kept strictly confidential and used solely for research purposes.

By participating in this study, young people will contribute to ongoing research into the relationship
between musical experience and emotional wellbeing. The findings from this study may also help in
the development of effective strategies for promoting emotional wellbeing and overall positive mental health among adolescents.
