MORE EGYPTIANS ARE GOING TO COLLEGE IN THE UK BY 70% OVER THE PAST SIX YEARS

The number of Egyptian students studying in the UK rose 70% in the past six years, going from 1,695 in the 2014/15 academic year to 2,895 this year, according to education search platform Erudera. 2,585 of these Egyptian students are studying in England, 200 students are in Scotland, 90 are in Wales, and just 25 are in Northern Ireland.

As one of the leading destinations for post-secondary education, the UK attracts hundreds of thousands of students from across the globe - approximately 485,000 annually. Although Egyptians studying in the UK is nothing new, what’s surprising is how suddenly the numbers jumped up. Between 2011 to 2018, the number of Egyptian students in the UK only grew by 5% - it’s only afterwards that numbers skyrocketed to such dizzying heights.

RIP prof Zewail. 💔

Remembering Nobel Prize laureate Ahmed Zewail.

In the late 1980s Zewail developed methods for studying chemical reactions in detail. Chemical reactions in which molecules held together by atoms meet and reorganise into new compounds are one of nature's most fundamental processes.

However this transition happens too quickly for us to easily see - in a matter of femtoseconds. One femtosecond is 0.000000000000001 seconds, which is to a second as a second is to 32 million years.

By using laser technology to produce flashes of light just a few femtoseconds long, Zewail was able to visualise these reactions in slow motion - and to see what actually happens when chemical bonds break and new ones are created.

Zewail's experiments led to the birth of the research area called femtochemistry, which enables us to understand why certain chemical reactions take place but not others.

We would like to thank everyone for attending our two-day event: 'Find your place in space', and a HUGE special thank you to our collaborators at SUAI - Studenti Universitari Arabi in Italia!

It was a true honour to host Dr Ramy El-Maarry and Dr Essam Heggy, we couldn't have asked for a better inspiration.

نتشرف بضيف اليوم الأول من فعالية Find your place on space
وهو عالم الفلك الدكتور محمد رامي المعرّي.

دكتور محمد المعرّي درس في كلية العلوم بالقاهرة وتخرج بتخصص مزدوج في الكيمياء والجيولوجيا وحصل على درجتين للماجيستير من جامعة لوليا في السويد في تكنولوجيا الفضاء ومن جامعة تولوز في فرنسا في علوم الكواكب والفيزياء الفلكية، وحصل على الدكتوراه من جامعة جوتينجن في ألمانيا لأبحاثه في معهد ماكس بلانك لدراسات المجموعة الشمسية باستخدام تقنيات الاستشعار عن بُعد.

الدكتور المعرّي يشغل حالياً منصب بروفيسور في جامعة خليفة بأبو ظبي، وهو عضو من أعضاء الفريق العلمى البحثى بوكالة الفضاء الأوروبية ناسا وأحد العلماء الأربعة المصريين المشاركين فى المهمة الفضائية الشهيرة Rosetta لدراسة المذنبات ومهمة New Horizon لاستكشاف حزام كايبر في الحدود الخارجية للمجموعة الشمسية.

وله العديد من الإسهامات المتميزة، ففي الوقت الحالي هو عضو في الفريق العلمي لأحد المهمات المستقبلية لدراسة المذنبات تسمى Comet Interceptor.

وهو من العلماء المتعاونين على مهمتي Mars Odyssey و Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter وكلاهما مهمات لوكالة ناسا. ويعمل أيضاً على ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter والتي تتبع وكالة إيسا الأوروبية ESA

ضيف اليوم التاني من فعالية find your place in space، هو عالم الفلك الدكتور عصام حجي.

دكتور عصام حجي هو عالم فلك في وكالة ناسا، حصل على بكالوريوس في علم الفلك من جامعة القاهرة وعلى ماجستير العلوم والدكتوراه مع مرتبة الشرف من جامعة باريس في فرنسا (UPMC-Sorbonne)، وهي أول دكتوراه مصرية في علم اكتشاف الكواكب، وحصل على العديد من الجوائز العلمية تقديرًا لدوره في اكتشاف الحياة على المريخ.

بدأ مشواره العلمي كمعيد في كلية العلوم بجامعة القاهرة، ثم باحثاً بالمركز القومي للبحوث CNRS بفرنسا ومركز الفضاء الفرنسي CNES، ثم أستاذاً مساعداً بجامعة باريس وبعد ذلك انتقل للعمل بوكالة ناسا NASA لأبحاث الفضاء بالولايات المتحدة.

من المهام العلمية الرائدة التي شارك فيها الدكتور حجي مهمة استكشاف الحياة على سطح المريخ، وكانت التجربة جزءًا مهمًا في التحضير لمهمة المركبة الفضائية "فيونيكس" التي انطلقت للمريخ وأسفرت عن إنجازات علمية كبيرة أبرزها اكتشاف وجود الجليد في قطبيه شمالا وجنوبا، مما يعني احتمال وجود شكلًا من أشكال الحياة في ماضي هذا الكوكب.
يعمل الدكتور عصام حجي حالياً في معمل محركات الدفع الصاروخي بوكالة ناسا الأمريكية والذي يشرف على العديد من المهام العلمية لاكتشاف كواكب المجموعة الشمسية. كما أنه عضو من فريق البحث لمشروع تتعاون فيه NASA مع ESA لدراسة المذنبات، كذلك يشارك في أبحاث استكشاف الماء على المريخ وتدريب رواد الفضاء وتصميم مركبات الفضاء المتجهة إلى أجزاء مختلفة من المجموعة الشمسية. كما أنه عضو زائر بهيئة التدريس بجامعة Caltech بولاية كاليفورنيا وهي أعلى الجامعات الأمريكية في مجال العلوم.

Our guest on the second day of “Find your place in space” is the space scientist, Dr Essam Heggy.

Dr Heggy is a space scientist in NASA, he got his bachelors degree in planetary science from Cairo University and then went on to obtain his masters and Ph.D. in astronomy and planetary science with distinguished honours from the Paris-Sorbonne University in France. It was the first Ph.D. to be done on planetary discovery by an Egyptian individual. Dr Heggy has since received countless scientific awards thanks to his role in the discovery of the possibility of life on Mars.

He started his scientific journey as a teaching assistant in the School of Sciences at Cairo University, following that he took up a researcher position in the French Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) in France. He would then become an associate professor at the University of Paris before working in NASA as a research scientist.

One of the pioneering missions that Dr Heggy participated in involved the search for extra-terrestrial life on Mars. This played an important role in the preparation of the space probe “Phoenix”, which landed on the planet to yield several significant scientific discoveries; one of which was the discovery of ice sheets in the north and south poles of the planet. This suggested that there might have been some form of life in the planet’s history.

Dr Heggy now works in the jet propulsion labs at NASA, where he supervises many of the scientific projects aiming to investigate other planets in the solar system. He is also a member of a research group that is a result of a NASA and ESA collaboration to study comets. Simultaneously, he works with other groups to investigate water on Mars, train astronauts, and design space probes that aim to target different parts of the solar system. Dr Heggy is currently a visiting professor at Caltech, one of the global leaders in engineering and physics.
