Thrilled with today's exam results

Scottish students received their SQA exam results today, 04 August.
At BK Tutoring, we had the best results ever for pupils supported by our tutors during the last school year. What stands out, are our Mandarin Chinese classes. Students who do not have Mandarin at school, were taking private online tuition with our experienced tutor, Chang, and achieved grades beyond expectations.
Congratulations to Sam, whose prelims predicted a very modest 23% in National 5 Mandarin and who was awarded a "B" in his exams - what a fantastic outcome!
Equally amazing is the "A" for a Higher Mandarin pupil who relied solely on her tutor and her own learning. She was 1 mark away from Band 1, achieving 101 points. Well done!
We have new students who will work with our tutors towards exams next summer and who take subjects outside of their schools' curriculum. It requires a lot of discipline and many hours of autodidactic work but with good guidance from tutors, the results can be amazing.

Chemistry online for High School exams:

If you are thinking about studying Chemistry, you might be picturing white coats, safety goggles and endless equations. Although there is definitely some of that, Chemistry is also one of the most interesting, useful and surprisingly creative subjects you can study. Our private tutor, Sam, has an in-depth knowledge of Chemistry and is researching the subject for his PhD. Sam has successfully supported many Chemistry pupils who prepare for Higher, Advanced Higher or A-Level exams. He has an approachable manner, offers clear explanations and gives structured guidance which make his online classes invaluable in the final years of secondary education.

Why Chemistry?
We often consider Chemistry to be the central science because it connects biology, physics, medicine, engineering and environmental science. In simple terms, Chemistry will help you understand what everything is made of and how it behaves. From the food you eat to the phone battery you rely on, it is Chemistry that is working quietly in the background.

What Is Studying Chemistry Really Like?
A Chemistry course usually mixes lectures, tutorials, problem-solving sessions and practical lab work. You’ll learn about organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and analytical techniques. Some parts can be challenging, especially the maths and lab reports, but that’s also what makes the subject rewarding. You’re not just memorising facts; you’re learning how to investigate, test ideas and think like a scientist.

Careers After a Chemistry Degree
One of the best things about a Chemistry degree is how many doors it can open. Chemistry graduates can go into pharmaceuticals, forensic science, environmental work, teaching, research, food science, materials science and even finance or business. Employers value the practical skills, data analysis, teamwork, communication and problem-solving that Chemistry students develop.

You can contact Sam today, have a 20-minute Free Consultation or a the first 40-minute online lesson and see how he can help you
achieve a very good outcome in your Chemistry exams next year.

Have you considered learning Polish?
It is a wonderfully tricky and beautiful language that takes regular practice and the support of an experienced private tutor. There is no better language to keep your brain working hard than Polish! One-to-one Polish lessons can help with faster progress and increase the feeling of confidence when using the language, for example in speaking.

For a good start, you can visit bktutoring.co.uk and meet Justyna, a new Polish tutor who brings many years of language-teaching experience and supports learners studying Polish for fun or for exams, travel or family and for personal development. In addition, Justyna has helped many pupils with GCSE Polish support and A Level Polish tuition.

Learn basic Polish phrases
Poland continues to grow as a popular European travel destination, so even basic Polish can improve your communication with local people. Although many younger people in larger cities such as Krakow and Warsaw speak English, a few polite Polish phrases are still really valuable and will improve your travel experiences.

Not much time for learning?
To help with this, an experienced private Polish tutor can target pronunciation and conversation practice. As a result, learners get practical support that fits their needs and helps them build strong language habits. This personal approach works especially well for people who do not have a lot of time to spend on their language learning. A tutor helps to streamline the material, structure her teaching and offers regular and individual feedback.
Lastly, at BK Tutoring, we care about good quality of tuition. Read through our reviews to see what other students have said. Finally, book a Free Consultation which will give you a simple (and free of charge) way to discuss your goals and meet the tutor.

Summer is the perfect time to start a new language journey

We welcome our new German tutor this month. Lisa is an approachable, experienced teacher with many years of work with secondary school students. We recommend her classes to everyone learning for GCSE, Nat5s or Adult Classes.

Whether you're planning a trip to Germany this summer or autumn or perhaps looking to boost your career prospects, Lisa can tailor the lessons to your needs. We deliver 1-to-1, online classes, which are an ideal opportunity to engage with the language of Beethoven, Goethe or Mrs Merkel.

Online German offers great flexibility. To help with this, you can book classes on our website selecting the most suitable times. Most of our learners meet with their tutor weekly but everyone finds their own rhythm and pace.

Right now, this may just be the best time to start! Regular online sessions, followed by a few minutes each day reviewing vocabulary are a good way to embark on the journey. From interactive exercises to language apps and virtual classrooms, there are countless resources available. Languages have never been more accessible!

However, while self-study is valuable, many learners find that working with a new German tutor can significantly accelerate the progress. Based on many years of experience, Lisa will easily identify areas for improvement and set up a learning plan for you.

By choosing to learn German online and joining a new tutor, you can make remarkable progress in just a few months. In only a few weeks of regular study, you'll notice how much German you can understand and speak!

Book now and “los geht’s” with the German adventure 😊

200 Years of Global Education
From 1820 to 2020, the access to basic education has been a story of success. If you were to travel back in time to 1820, you would find a world where only a tiny fraction of children could read, write, or even set foot in a classroom. Education was a privilege reserved largely for the wealthy, and classrooms were more likely to be draughty parish halls than the vibrant learning hubs we see in many countries today.

Higher Mandarin: Why Students Often Struggle
Today, we want to share our tutor's Higher Mandarin exam tips for the different sections of the SQA examination.

1. The Listening Leap:
Higher Mandarin features faster speech and denser content. We build "exam ears" by using authentic SQA audio. This is then paired with regular exposure to native-speaker input..........[further reading at https://bktutoring.co.uk/higher-mandarin-exam-tips/]

2. The "Translation" and the "Overall Purpose" question in the Reading paper:
In the Reading paper, the 10-mark translation section requires precision and skill. Many students lose marks on "sense units"—it's not just about the vocabulary, but the grammatical nuance. For Chinese language, you might recognise each individual character or you could look up unknown characters in a dictionary. However, to successfully translate the text, you need a strong understanding of the context, sentence structures, and know how single characters form into meaningful chunks. And this is when an experienced tutor can be helpful. We provide targeted training for the "Overall Purpose" question — a new challenge at Higher level that requires students to synthesise the entire text. This is a skill that even top performers must master.

3. Directed Writing task:
Although candidates get to choose between two themes, they need to hit all six bullet points (no prepared bullets) or face a heavy mark penalty. I provide differentiated language tools that guarantee coverage and "flair". For instance, I teach students a bank of Higher-level structures (like 把 sentences, passive 被 patterns, and idiomatic 成语) that are pre-vetted to meet the SQA "Detailed and Complex" criteria. A common pitfall for writing is to misuse the dictionary to translate ideas from English-to-Chinese.........[further reading on our website]

4. Writing Assignment:
Students are expected to produce a long-form, discursive essay (260–330 characters) from scratch. Unlike the Directed Writing section, this Assignment requires students to argue a point of view. This means a challenge of the linguistic depth and critical thinking ability. Our students benefit massively from the guided practice on discussing pros and cons, expressing complex opinions, and drawing a valid conclusion. The SQA allows for a drafting process. I use the official SQA Marking Codes (e.g. t for tense, wo for word order) so students learn exactly where their grammatical blind spots are.

Higher Mandarin exam tips like these are a valuable source of learning for students. We are open for online Mandarin classes, all levels and qualifications. Please go to our homepage to book a Free Consultation with Chang.

Structured 1-hour lesson

For those who wonder what a one-hour private online lesson might look like, we have asked our Mandarin Chinese tutor, Chang, to summarise a typical class with her Higher Mandarin student.
They work together twice a week for one hour and focus on preparing the student for her SQA Higher Mandarin exams later this year.

"Depending on the student's ability and learning style, I would always differentiate my preparation and the delivery of the lesson to match the learner's pace. With hard-working and high achievers like my current student, this is how our 1-hour session went today:

- Warm-up and lead-in (15 mins): Targeted speaking practice for the upcoming prelim. This included 10 minutes of exam-condition conversation followed by 5 minutes of immediate, actionable feedback.

- New content (15 mins): Mastered key vocabulary and complex structures within the "Culture – Gap Year" theme..."

My Nursery is a Giant White Cat!
Kindergarten “Die Katze”
It’s good to know that some countries bring a lot of fun ideas into Education. For example, a nursery school in Germany has been modelled on the idea of a giant white cat (image below) by an artist Tomi Ungerer and architect Ayla Suzan Yöndel. This inspiring project will serve many generations of children to instil the element of fun into their experience of education.
With a simple and fitting name “Die Katze”, the building can be found near the city of Karlsruhe, in Wolfartsweier. Up to 100 children can enter it through the doors in the mouth of the cat and spend a day inside the cat’s belly. Since its construction in 2011, the Kindergarten has attracted a lot of attention, some people are sceptical, but most reactions are very positive and praise the courage to find new designs for buildings which do not have to all look the same.

It is a truly fascinating building!!!
