200 Years of Global Education
From 1820 to 2020, the access to basic education has been a story of success. If you were to travel back in time to 1820, you would find a world where only a tiny fraction of children could read, write, or even set foot in a classroom. Education was a privilege reserved largely for the wealthy, and classrooms were more likely to be draughty parish halls than the vibrant learning hubs we see in many countries today.

Higher Mandarin: Why Students Often Struggle
Today, we want to share our tutor's Higher Mandarin exam tips for the different sections of the SQA examination.
1. The Listening Leap:
Higher Mandarin features faster speech and denser content. We build "exam ears" by using authentic SQA audio. This is then paired with regular exposure to native-speaker input..........[further reading at https://bktutoring.co.uk/higher-mandarin-exam-tips/]
2. The "Translation" and the "Overall Purpose" question in the Reading paper:
In the Reading paper, the 10-mark translation section requires precision and skill. Many students lose marks on "sense units"—it's not just about the vocabulary, but the grammatical nuance. For Chinese language, you might recognise each individual character or you could look up unknown characters in a dictionary. However, to successfully translate the text, you need a strong understanding of the context, sentence structures, and know how single characters form into meaningful chunks. And this is when an experienced tutor can be helpful. We provide targeted training for the "Overall Purpose" question — a new challenge at Higher level that requires students to synthesise the entire text. This is a skill that even top performers must master.
3. Directed Writing task:
Although candidates get to choose between two themes, they need to hit all six bullet points (no prepared bullets) or face a heavy mark penalty. I provide differentiated language tools that guarantee coverage and "flair". For instance, I teach students a bank of Higher-level structures (like 把 sentences, passive 被 patterns, and idiomatic 成语) that are pre-vetted to meet the SQA "Detailed and Complex" criteria. A common pitfall for writing is to misuse the dictionary to translate ideas from English-to-Chinese.........[further reading on our website]
4. Writing Assignment:
Students are expected to produce a long-form, discursive essay (260–330 characters) from scratch. Unlike the Directed Writing section, this Assignment requires students to argue a point of view. This means a challenge of the linguistic depth and critical thinking ability. Our students benefit massively from the guided practice on discussing pros and cons, expressing complex opinions, and drawing a valid conclusion. The SQA allows for a drafting process. I use the official SQA Marking Codes (e.g. t for tense, wo for word order) so students learn exactly where their grammatical blind spots are.

Structured 1-hour lesson
For those who wonder what a one-hour private online lesson might look like, we have asked our Mandarin Chinese tutor, Chang, to summarise a typical class with her Higher Mandarin student.
They work together twice a week for one hour and focus on preparing the student for her SQA Higher Mandarin exams later this year.
"Depending on the student's ability and learning style, I would always differentiate my preparation and the delivery of the lesson to match the learner's pace. With hard-working and high achievers like my current student, this is how our 1-hour session went today:
- Warm-up and lead-in (15 mins): Targeted speaking practice for the upcoming prelim. This included 10 minutes of exam-condition conversation followed by 5 minutes of immediate, actionable feedback.
- New content (15 mins): Mastered key vocabulary and complex structures within the "Culture – Gap Year" theme..."

My Nursery is a Giant White Cat!
Kindergarten “Die Katze”
It’s good to know that some countries bring a lot of fun ideas into Education. For example, a nursery school in Germany has been modelled on the idea of a giant white cat (image below) by an artist Tomi Ungerer and architect Ayla Suzan Yöndel. This inspiring project will serve many generations of children to instil the element of fun into their experience of education.
With a simple and fitting name “Die Katze”, the building can be found near the city of Karlsruhe, in Wolfartsweier. Up to 100 children can enter it through the doors in the mouth of the cat and spend a day inside the cat’s belly. Since its construction in 2011, the Kindergarten has attracted a lot of attention, some people are sceptical, but most reactions are very positive and praise the courage to find new designs for buildings which do not have to all look the same.

For Online German learning: “Ohne Sprache keine Heimat”
No one can be happy anywhere without being able to make friendly contacts with the locals!
My friend and fellow linguist in Germany, Dr Britta Zangen, set up a great initiative, linking people who have moved to Germany without speaking the language with Germans who are happy to help them learn. The initiative is free for all involved. For those loving outside of Germany but planning to move there, it may also be a great tool to prepare. If you are looking for partners to practice German or your German is good enough to help others, find each other free of charge at www.britta-zangen.de
Help others find this website if they need help with German.
At BK Tutoring, we offer German to children and adults in the UK and encourage them to learn and keep using this important language. We also help with learning English as a Foreign Language and have English tutors ready to help learn or perfect your English. Whether it is for Education, Work or to make friends in the UK, book a class with one of our team and start learning.

GCSE results 2025 – promising signs.
The release of this year’s GCSE results reminds us of 2024. We see a similar proportion of grades 7 and above (23%), similar number of students achieved grade 4 or more (67%). The marking standards are back to pre-Covid levels which is quite encouraging if we consider that this year’s GCSE students were in the final year of Primary School in 2020 when the pandemic started.
One can deduct that despite the fact that the 2025 cohort faced unique challenges, the students have also embraced the opportunities they were presented with, for example becoming more resilient to interruption of studies and increasingly resourceful, utilising new ways of learning and finding support.
Colleges and universities value GCSE exams because they show the potential of the young people. This potential is soon put to the test again, through A Level exams. It is the A Levels which make the real difference when it comes to finishing Secondary Education.
👏 The success of this year’s GCSE students is due to their growing autonomous learning abilities. Students who come to BK Tutoring for help with GCSE and A Level study are motivated and self-aware to a much higher degree than it was a few years ago. They start thinking about A Levels and organising their work load before their parents start prompting them and this is a very positive development.

What is the UCAT?
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is a computer-based admissions test which a vast majority of medical and dental schools in Great Britain ask for as part of their entry requirements. It is designed to assess a range of cognitive abilities, attitudes, and professional behaviours considered appropriate for healthcare professionals.
The examination comprises five distinct sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Situational Judgement. Each section presents unique challenges, requiring candidates not only to understand the content but also to hone time management and analytical skills.
Universities have a cut-off UCAT result which they will accept, e.g. for 2025 entry, most UK universities look for a score of minimum 2500 and only Band 1,2 and 3 of the Situational Judgement section will be accepted.
Next to GCSE and A Level requirements for prospective medical students, the UCAT forms another very competitive hurdle.
BK Tutoring offers superb online UCAT revision classes with an enthusiastic and experienced tutor. By combining expert instruction with self-study candidates can face the test with far more confidence. As entry to MBChB programmes is very competitive, it is worth investing in structured preparation. Book your UCAT tuition at BK Tutoring now to ensure that you are equipped to demonstrate your full potential when it matters most.
