Erdkinder Forest School

Erdkinder Forest School Erdkinder Forest School offers forest school and outdoor learning sessions for primary school age children.

Our current group meets on Tuesdays throughout the school year. Erdkinder Forest School offers a safe physical and emotional space for learning through exploration. Each group has a high ratio of adults to children, allowing us to observe individual interests and group dynamics then build on these ideas, facilitating experiences that enable each person to explore, develop and realise their visions. While joining Erdkinder might allow someone to experience using tools, campfire cooking or building shelters, it is the process - not the just the skill - that we learn from. Each new challenge mastered develops confidence; each setback provides the opportunity to reflect, build resilience and try again or try a new direction. Erdkinder allows the holistic development of each individual that lasts far beyond the programme, creating meaningful relationship with nature, with our community and with our sense of self as we continue our journey along our chosen paths.

Forest school archery!

Today we made bows and arrows then tested them out. We were having so much fun making them I forgot to take pics of the process! The kids did a great job using secateurs to cut green willow, using a knife to make a stop cut notch to hold the string, then a timber hitch to secure the string on the bow. Nice work guys!

We have been working on our fire skills the last few weeks, so now we can put them to good use and make ourselves some tasty snacks. Apples and pears baked with cinnamon sugar - yummy!

Dam busters! We always leave our site as we find it (or better! We do a litter pick when we arrive). The kids worked hard to collect mud and dam the stream, then had fun destroying the dam to restore the water flow. Check it out ...

Last session of 2021 for our Tuesday crew yesterday. We worked on our fire skills: collecting and sorting wood, using a fire steel, lighting the kelly kettle and fire. Then we put the fire to good use baking stuffed apples and spiced juice. Yummy!

We are definitely feeling the change in season with the cold wet weather recently! Here are two of our Tuesday group modelling how to dress to stay comfortable for a day in the woods: warm layers, full waterproofs, boots, hats, gloves and a scarf or buff.

We have been working on fire lighting skills too, so we can stay warm round the fire and make hot drinks. Yummy!
