🚑💚 TOMORROW IS WORLD FIRST AID DAY! 💚🚑

And if there’s one thing we’re passionate about at Mini First Aid Edinburgh, it’s FIRST AID! 🙌

We know that first aid isn’t just about knowing what to do… it’s about having the confidence to step in when it matters most.

Whether it’s a little one who’s choking, a nasty burn, a head bump, a serious bleed or something completely unexpected, knowing those simple skills could make a huge difference. ❤️

So, for World First Aid Day, we’ve asked our amazing team:

💭 Why do YOU think first aid is so important?

It’s about confidence. Knowledge. Reassurance. And being ready when someone needs you. 🫶

Because you never know when you might need to use first aid but knowing what to do could change everything. 🚑

Are you first aid ready? 👀

🚨 EMERGENCY SERVICES DAY 2026

Today, 9th September, we’re celebrating and thanking the incredible people who work and volunteer across our NHS and emergency services.

From our paramedics, firefighters and police officers to search and rescue teams, NHS staff and the amazing 999 call handlers who are often the first voice you hear in an emergency, we’re so grateful for everything you do. 👏🏼

Almost 2 million people work and volunteer across the NHS and emergency services, helping to keep us safe and supporting us when we need them most.

📞 BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CALL 999?

Knowing what to expect can help you stay calm and provide the information the emergency services need.

We’ve included a link below to find out what happens after you call 999, it’s worth taking a few minutes to read, because you never know when you might need it.

💚 From everyone at Mini First Aid Edinburgh thank you.

I’ve changed careers more than once, and I’m so glad I did.

I worked in the financial industry for years but never really felt fulfilled.

Then I retrained as a midwife. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I loved caring for families and worked with some incredible people.

But the shifts were long, unsociable, and the job could be incredibly sad and stressful. With two young children, I was exhausted and missing time with my family.

Then, in early 2020, I took another huge leap of faith and bought a Mini First Aid franchise. After years working on postnatal wards, I knew just how important first aid skills are for parents and carers.

The pandemic delayed our launch until October, and I left my NHS midwifery post in January 2021.

What started as just me teaching classes has grown into Mini First Aid Edinburgh & The Lothians, with a brilliant team of four.

Since then, we’ve taught thousands of parents and carers, hundreds of children life-saving skills and delivered hundreds of workplace first aid qualifications.

We’ve also had some amazing recognition along the way, but the thing I’m most proud of is building something that fits around my family while still allowing me to help people.

I don’t believe you have to stay in a career just because you trained for it.

Sometimes you have to be brave enough to climb out of it (like me in the video 😉).

🩸 LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDS: DON’T JUST LOOK AT WHETHER IT’S SPURTING.

Is it arterial?
Is it venous?
Is it spurting?
Is it pooling?

These things don’t necessarily tell you whether a bleed is life-threatening.

Instead, ask yourself:

🔴 Is the amount of blood loss obviously life-threatening?

🔴 Can I control the bleeding with normal first aid?

If pressure and dressings aren’t working, escalate your response.

And remember to look for the blood you can’t see, under clothing, underneath the casualty, or absorbed into carpets, clothing and other surfaces.

🚨 Don’t diagnose the vessel. Assess the bleeding.

From 1 September, life-threatening bleeding will be included in all our qualification courses, giving candidates practical skills and confidence to respond when it matters most.

The Knife Angel has arrived in Edinburgh!

🚨 FROM TOMORROW (September 1st) WE’RE ADDING LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDING TO OUR WORKPLACE FIRST AID COURSES.

Because first aid isn’t just about cuts, grazes and bandages.

Sometimes bleeding is so severe that ordinary first aid isn’t enough.

Our candidates will learn how to recognise life-threatening bleeding and practise techniques including:

🩸 Direct pressure
🩸 Wound packing
🩸 Haemostatic dressings
🩸 Tourniquets

We’ll also cover when these techniques are appropriate and when they aren’t.

💧 But do you know what the water bottle in our first aid kit is for? 👀

You might be surprised! Pop your guesses in the comments.

Different injuries. Different techniques. One goal: keep the casualty alive until help arrives. 💚

A family who came to one of our Mini First Aid courses five years ago sent me a message this week.

They’d done the course before their first baby. Since then, they’d only needed the usual bits of first aid: head bumps, cuts and bruises.

Until their two-year-old choked on a piece of rigatoni.

He couldn’t breathe.

They knew what to do. They gave back blows, then abdominal thrusts while their husband called an ambulance. The food dislodged just as their little boy’s face was starting to turn blue.

I felt hugely proud that I’d taught them those skills.

But more than that, I felt incredibly thankful that they knew what to do, because without that knowledge, this could have been so much more serious.

And this is exactly why I believe you don't need to be medical. You don't need to spend a full day learning everything there is to know about first aid.

You just need to know the basics.

Because you don't know when you'll need them. It might be tomorrow. It might be next week. It might be five years from now.

But when something happens, having those skills means you're not starting from zero.

If you've ever thought, “I wouldn't know what to do”, you're exactly the person I want to teach.

Follow Mini First Aid for simple, practical first aid that helps you feel more prepared.

🔥 A REAL-LIFE STORY: HOW QUICK THINKING HELPED GRACIE AFTER A BURN 💚

At Mini First Aid, we often say that accidents can happen in seconds, but knowing what to do can make all the difference.

Today, we’re sharing Gracie’s story – a little girl whose Christmas Day took an unexpected turn, and how her family’s quick actions helped her recover.

It’s a powerful reminder that burns can happen in an instant, but having the right knowledge can help you stay calm, act quickly and give the correct first aid when it matters most. 🩹

💚 And this is exactly why our August fundraiser is so important.

We’re proud to be supporting the incredible as they celebrate 25 years of helping children and their families, while raising awareness of burns prevention and providing vital support.

The Mini First Aid network is taking on a 150-mile walking challenge throughout August, and we’re raising funds along the way! 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Every donation helps support the incredible work of the Children’s Burns Trust. 💚

Together, we can help prevent burns, teach life-saving first aid and support children and families when they need it most. 💚

💚 HEAD BUMP OR CONCUSSION? KNOW WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR💚

Head bumps are common in babies and children, but it’s important to know what to look out for following a head injury.

🤕 IF YOUR CHILD HAS A BUMP
• Sit them down and apply a cold compress to the area for at least 10 minutes to help soothe pain.
• If they have a headache, you can give an appropriate age-related dose of paracetamol.
• Keep things calm and avoid active play while they recover — they need time to rest.

⚠️ SIGNS OF CONCUSSION / HEAD INJURY

Keep an eye out for:
• A headache
• Feeling sick or being sick
• Mild dizziness or feeling “wobbly”
• Blurred vision
• Losing consciousness, even briefly
• Difficulty staying awake
• A dent in the head or other signs of skull damage
• Slurred speech
• Weakness or loss of feeling in the arms or legs
• A seizure

🚨 If your child experiences any of these signs, or is behaving in a way that isn’t usual for them, seek medical advice immediately.

And remember trust your gut. You know your child better than anyone else.
